To our keepers and aquarists who: Transport animals, run safety drills, respond to midnight alarms, support conservation, target-feed, dive tanks, care for injured animals, monitor welfare, replicate natural habitats, promote genetic diversity, clean glass, shed the tears, administer medication, brave excessive heat, keep species from extinction, provide palliative care, train behaviors, teach about animals, backwash filters, recycle, rake yards, mentor the next generation, chop all the vegetables, monitor nitrates, treat wounds, collect fecal samples, maintain pumps, deal with the smells, plant the plants, pull the weeds, research care, siphon gravel, provide enrichment, record data, and passionately care for our animals each and every day... THANK YOU! 💕 #GreensboroScienceCenter #VisitGSO #KeeperAquaristAppreciation

Happy Andean Bear Day! 🐻 Today, we celebrate Andean bears, the only bear species in South America, found in the Andes Mountain range across Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. These bears, also known as "spectacled bears," have unique facial markings that look like glasses, each as distinct as a fingerprint! Celebrate Andean Bear Day by purchasing "Is There a Bear Over There?", a children's book featuring Yana, an adventurous Andean bear. Join Yana on her journey through South America as she searches for her family and makes new friends along the way. This adorable book is illustrated by Jessica Hoffman, the GSC's VP of Animal Care and Welfare. With over 25 years of experience in the zoological field, Jessica has worked with various species across the U.S. Her love for animals began on a dairy farm in Wisconsin and grew through her studies in biology and wildlife. Alongside her scientific career, Jessica has a passion for watercolor painting, which led her to illustrate this book. Proceeds from "Is There a Bear Over There?" go to AZA's Andean Bear SAFE Program, supporting the conservation of this incredible species. You can also help Andean bears by purchasing Buy Bird Friendly® certified coffee, which helps protect their habitat. In February of 1976, the Sigmund Sternberger Health Theater welcomed its new resident, TAM (Transparent Anatomical Manikin). The life-sized transparent female mannequin was computer-controlled, and taught guests about the functions of various human body parts, using her own body (in which the part in question lit up) as a model. The Sigmund Sternberger Health Theater was devoted to human anatomy and physiology, with TAM as the central exhibit. #GreensboroScienceCenter #GSCRewind #TAM #TransparentAnatomicalManikin
