KELP WANTED 🌊🌿 California's imperiled kelp canopies support all kinds of life. What can we do to show these underwater forests some love? Kelp forests have value beyond their beauty. Found on every continent along more than a third of the world’s shorelines, they make up the single largest coastal marine habitat on Earth. They shelter biodiversity, sequester carbon, and provide innumerable benefits to people. However, globally, the Kelp Forest Alliance estimates that more than 7 million acres of kelp forest have been lost. Want to learn more? Snot otters, lasagna lizards, devil dogs, mud devils... 🦎 These fantastic beasts have many nicknames. What other nicknames should they be called? The largest salamander in North America by weight, otherwise known as the hellbender, is an unforgettable species, to say the least. These amphibians are elusive, spending most of their time hiding under rocks watching for prey, with a large diet of crayfish. Hellbenders eat a variety of prey, including crayfish, fish, insects, worms, snails, tadpoles, and even other hellbenders. Another crazy feature of these carnivorous amphibians is they have lungs, but absorb up to 95 percent of their oxygen through their skin, primarily through its folds and wrinkles. #wildlife #nature #hellbender #salamander #funfacts

It's #WorldFireflyDay 🦗💡 Did you know there are more than 2,000 species of fireflies? This phenomenon is called bioluminescence, and the bioluminescent organs in fireflies are found on the underside of the abdomen; creating a chemical reaction within the firefly’s light organ that produces the light. Bioluminescence in fireflies is nearly 100 percent efficient, making it one of the most efficient lights in the world. 🌏 Fun fact: Firefly larvae eat snails, worms, and slugs, which they inject with a numbing chemical to disable. 🐌 #wildlife #fireflies #lightningbugs #funfacts #nature

This Pollinator Month, Let’s Thank Our Monarch Champions! 🦋 Mayor Brad Wiersum signed the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge for City of Minnetonka in 2017, embarking on a mission to protect and nurture monarchs, pollinators, and other wildlife across public and private lands. Since 2020, Minnetonka has achieved Monarch Champion status THREE times, a prestigious accolade for communities that complete 24 dedicated actions to engage residents and enhance quality habitats for these awe-inspiring pollinators. This July, Minnetonka will celebrate its 8th annual Monarch & Pollinator Awareness Month! The city will be promoting the Polli-Neighbor Pledge, encouraging residents to take proactive steps in their neighborhoods to support pollinators where they live, play, learn, and worship. Join us in applauding Mayor Wiersum and the City of Minnetonka for their unwavering commitment and remarkable achievements! Don’t forget to thank City of Minnetonka and Mayor Brad Wiersum, and let’s continue to spread the word and encourage more cities to follow their lead! 📲 https://ow.ly/fAlX50Smz1R #MonarchChampion #PollinatorWeek #MayorsMonarchPledge
