Smol and fierce! 🐥💪 The American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America – and one of the most colorful! They can be found throughout North America in both the countryside and cities, as long as it’s anywhere with enough open space where they can hunt for small prey, with grasshoppers being a particular favorite. They are also mysterious little birds. While researchers know their general range, there is much they do not know about their particular territories, or where they tend to hunt most. Fine, keep your secrets! One mystery scientists are seriously trying to solve is why kestrel populations, despite being one of the most common falcons in North America, are in decline. Federal funding from crucial bills like the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act could help keep these small and mighty falcons in the skies across the US for years to come (and keep them tackling those pesky grasshopper swarms). #wildlife #conservation #nature #birds #funfacts

It’s time to rethink hydro on the lower Snake River. Hydroelectric dams are causing more harm than good—river fragmentation, which often results from dams built, is a major factor in fish population declines. Inner-planetary heat is free, non-polluting, and endlessly renewable. 🌍 All we need to do is keep developing the technology so we can put it into use. Once we do, that power will be available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. ⏰ Listen or read to learn more about geothermal power plants as a clean energy solution 📲: https://ow.ly/i7Np50SGcaJ #wildlife #geothermal #CleanEnergy #RenewableEnergy

Imagine being able to swim at 8 hours old...🐣🏊 One of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the United States is the annual congregation of the sandhill cranes, where for a month each March, more than 500,000 sandhill cranes converge on the Platte River basin. Here they have the chance to find mates, where they perform dancing displays, and afterward mate for life. When the pair reaches the northern breeding grounds, they mate and build a nest. Cranes build a ground nest out of plant materials. They often have two eggs. The pair will take care of the nest together with the male standing guard. #wildlife #birds #cranes #funfacts #breeding #science

Lessons From Elders 🐘 A fossil site in rural Florida provides an unprecedented look at prehistoric elephant relatives that lived amid a warming climate, offering potential insights for present-day conservation. From its headwaters in Georgia, the Suwannee River meanders 246 miles south, tea-colored and wild, through some of the most remote and undeveloped parts of Florida before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. It was in one of the fields east of the river that, in 2015, a curious 5-year-old found a peculiar fossil, an unprecedented look at gomphotheres—elephant relatives that lived in a warming climate—and offers insights for today. Today marks the 4th anniversary of the passing of civil rights leader Congressman John Lewis. Rep. Lewis dedicated his life and career to ensuring all Americans can exercise their right to vote and make their voice heard on the issues that matter to them and their communities. But new state legislation over the past few years has added barriers to voting, especially for predominantly Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities that already are facing the greatest threats from pollution. It’s important now more than ever for everyone to use their voice to speak out for wildlife, clean air, clean water, and democracy.
