Cort and Cara had an incredible conversation with Rachel Kohler from City of Corvallis, Oregon, on the latest episode of Open Space Radio about the winning photo from our Park and Recreation Month Cover Contest. Tune in to learn about the Majestic Theater and how they are fostering belonging. Fostering belonging for adults and youth, staff and volunteers. All while bringing art to the community of Corvallis, Oregon. Rachel Kohler is the cultural arts and community engagement recreation coordinator for City of Corvallis, and a big piece in making this production so inclusive. In Corvallis, reimagining who is invited to participate in the theater began with putting together an audition announcement that encouraged people of all ages, identities and abilities to get involved. “A lot of work has been put into the audition announcement,” says Christel Birdwell, City of Corvallis cultural arts and community engagement supervisor. “Rachel has been a big part of this, to make it much more inclusive so it doesn’t seem like it’s just trying to get one slice of who we serve here in Corvallis, but to really be open. Like, ‘This character can be played really by anyone.’” Listen now: https://bit.ly/4eJ99HV #WhereYouBelong #ParkAndRecMonth #ParkAndRecMonth24 #PowerOfParks

This week of Park and Recreation Month, we are celebrating how agencies can act as advocates for belonging 🌟 What does it mean to be an advocate for belonging? It means to center diversity, equity, and inclusion so that we may model the beautiful, kind, welcoming world we would like to see. Park and Recreation agencies have the power to bring communities together, and create this sense of belonging through inclusion. Our cover contest winner, City of Corvallis Parks and Recreation, put on a production of The Tempest where the cast was filled with diversity in terms of gender, age, and physical ability. About a third of the cast identified as trans, older adults learned about gender diversity, and accessibility accommodations were made for a wheelchair user. Explore how City of Corvallis is an advocate for belonging: https://lnkd.in/eEzgV9Ti Thank you to our 2024 Park and Recreation Month sponsors, (USTA) United States Tennis Association, Bobcat Company, and ACTIVE Network! Your support means we can focus more energy and time on uplifting the powerful nature of parks, recreation, and the professionals behind this work. Simonds Park in Burlington, Massachusetts, is the community’s flagship park as it features a variety of amenities and is centrally located for community access. Throughout the years, improvements and additions have been made to the park, the most recent of which is the universally accessible treehouse. Burlington Parks and Recreation officially opened the amenity on November 19, 2022. The universally accessible treehouse is the first of its kind in a public park in Massachusetts. Read the full article to explore four short stories highlighting how the treehouse connected the community in its inaugural year. Each story demonstrates why the treehouse is where community grows in Burlington. July is not only Park and Recreation Month, it's Disability Pride Month🌟 So we wanted to reflect on our 2023 Cover Contest winner. This story comes from Glenwood Springs, Co and highlights Isaac Alonso's experience with Glenwood's therapeutic recreation program. Stories like Isaac's are so important, where we can so clearly see the social, emotional, and physical benefits of recreation. A story where we also see the ripple effect of benefits for Isaac's brother, parents, and friends. It further reinforces the importance of working towards a sense of belonging in our parks and recreation facilities, so that all bodies and minds can feel comfortable to move and connect.
