  • Yesterday, Michigan banned the LGBTQ "panic" defense, affirming the dignity of LGBTQ Michiganders inside and outside of the courtroom. This repugnant legal tactic is now prohibited in twenty states and the District of Columbia. Congratulations to all who worked hard to achieve this important milestone, and thank you to the State Bar of Michigan LGBTQ Section, an official affiliate of the National LGBTQ Bar, for their tireless efforts in ensuring LGBTQ people can access justice. The LGBTQ "panic" defense relies on the homophobic and transphobic idea that an LGBTQ identity is so inherently alarming and dangerous that violence inflicted on LGBTQ people is justifiable. Recently, the National LGBTQ Bar joined 38 other organizations to submit a letter to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy highlighting the experiences of LGBTQ people with disabilities to inform a new evidence agenda for disability equity.
