New technologies, like artificial intelligence (AI), have the potential to shape the future of aging. One example is SafelyYou, an NIA small business funding recipient that has developed an AI-based algorithm to automatically detect when a patient falls in a nursing home. The video footage can be used to determine the cause, whether the event is bad enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room, and offer insight into preventing future falls. Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder with movement symptoms that rapidly worsen and lead to life-threatening complications. In three different species, NIA-funded researchers examined how PSP influences gene expression in specific types of brain cells. The experiments and analysis discovered three genes — DDR2, STOM, and KANK2 — as possible therapeutic targets.
