Why are Women & Girls penalized for Menstruating? In some African countries, women on the minimum wage have to spend between 3-13% of their salary to buy 2 packets of sanitary towels containing 8 pads - what many women will need each month. 👉🏽Period Poverty according to UNFPA "the struggle many low-income women and girls face while trying to afford menstrual products" 👉🏽Tampon tax refers to the taxes added to period products like pads, tampons, and menstrual cups. These taxes treat period products as luxury items rather than everyday essentials. Period products shouldn’t be taxed like luxury goods that only the rich can afford – they’re basic necessities that every woman needs access to. What do we want? Removal of taxation on menstrual products, enforcement of progressive period policies in all workplaces and provision of free sanitary pads and sanitation in all schools. It is unacceptable in 2024 to have girls dropout of school or lose their jobs because of their periods! #IAmNala

As we mark this day, let’s remember that violence against women in Africa remains one of the most pervasive and devastating forms of injustice. From domestic abuse to harmful practices like FGM, too many women and girls continue to suffer in silence. #IAmNala

Last week, in my capacity as a Nala Feminist Collective Fellow, I was privileged to facilitate a virtual session (Collaborative Analysis and Recommendations) with leading advocates and civil society organisations with civil society organizations (CSOs) from across five (5) Africa's regions—north, west, central, east, and southern Africa. This virtual consultation was hosted by the GIMAC Network in collaboration with African Renaissance and Nala Feminist Collective, and UN Women. The consultation was a platform for CSOs, women's groups, and other relevant stakeholders to contribute their expertise and perspectives to the ongoing development of the AU CEVAWG which will be the first continental legal instrument for the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls, demonstrating African leadership and influencing global standards in efforts to protect women and girls. The African Union is developing the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU CEVAWG) which aims to establish a legally binding framework that emphasizes accountability, protection, and support, particularly in light of increased violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, systemic issues within justice systems, and the underperformance of previous frameworks by member states. #genderbasedviolence #AU #UNWomen #NalaFem
