It was a pleasure to speak with my friend Jeana Ross as a recent guest on the Saul Zaentz Charitable Foundation’s Starting at Zero podcast. It was a great opportunity to talk about the ongoing need to support early educators as they partner with families in the care and education of our youngest learners. And I loved sharing my own career journey and how my children’s educators helped my three sons develop and grow!

Let's support multilingual learners! When teachers recognize and support translanguaging, they foster multilingual early learning spaces. This creates a sense of belonging for all and nurtures more equitable learning communities. 1.) Celebrate families and their home languages by partnering with them. Invite families to share their traditions and everyday practices while including opportunities for translanguaging. 2.) Use digital communication apps and portfolios to honor children’s home languages and support translanguaging. Share daily photos to spark conversations at home. Also post questions so that families can share stories and information with you. 3.) Incorporate dual language and non-English books. Reading books in children's home languages fosters a sense of pride and belonging. It also promotes critical thinking, literacy, and communication skills as children engage with books in other languages. Learn more by reading our article, "Honoring Home Languages: Strategies to Encourage Preschoolers’ Translanguaging Practices" in the Summer 2024 Issue of Teaching Young Children.
