Congratulations! You’ve achieved a new level of success and trust… or have you? First it’s important to acknowledge that what got you here won’t keep you there or help you go to the next level…that means you’ve got to learn to new skills, embrace new ideas, test new strategies and build new relationships. Be genuinely curious about EVERYTHING. Ask questions about each area, not because you don’t know, but because you value the voice of each stakeholder around you! I’ve spoken about the levels of leadership a professional travels through in their career and when you get a new position, you start that journey over, from positional through production and then towards the aspirational transformative leader, where people follow you, not because of your title or the outcomes that you generate, but because of what you represent and believe! A few weeks ago, I had the honor of participating in a panel at the 2024 NAAIA - National African American Insurance Association conference in New Orleans. This was my second time speaking at a NAAIA event, but my first full experience at a conference. With 17 years in the industry, I was truly impressed by the experience and knowledge being shared, sense of community, support, and connection among fellow insurance professionals. On my panel, I joined an inspiring group of women, Cydney Albert, MBA, CPCU Meka Moore Irlande Audenier, MBA , to discuss the topic, "Choose To Protect Your Peace: Preventing and Overcoming Career Burnout and Finding Fulfillment in the Workplace." The feedback and engagement from our discussion reminded me of the importance of the work I do as a Self-Wellness Coach. Many people feel that acknowledging burnout is a sign of weakness or lack of commitment, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Choosing to prioritize your well-being is vital to showing up as your best self. I want to extend my gratitude to NAAIA - National African American Insurance Association for the opportunity to share my insights and best practices on how I've managed to protect my peace and avoid burnout in the workplace. Additionally, a heartfelt thank you to NAAIA Dallas Fort Worth Chapter for welcoming me and making my first full conference experience truly memorable.

Three of my favorite moments from the NAAIA National Conference in New Orleans: 1) The Annual Membership Meeting. We shared lots of exciting updates about NAAIA's growth, Vision 2030 progress and our new mentorship program. There were over 700 members in that meeting, which is more people than all of the attendees and exhibitors at our 2022 conference. Wow! 2) The State of Black America fireside chat with Charles Phipps of the Urban League Of Louisiana was a top hit. His question to us: are you renting your job in the insurance industry or owning your job in the insurance industry? To make progress on all issues - voting rights, pay equity, closing the racial wealth gap, overcoming the DEI backlash, we have to embrace an ownership mentality. 3) The Annual Awards Gala. Not only did we get to celebrate outstanding leaders in our industry, we raised nearly $70,000 in support of future leaders through the JL. Tillman Endowed Scholarship. The gala is the official end of conference and you can see my joy as I hit the dance floor. To answer your question: yes, I knuck if you buck. 🤣 #millenial NAAIA - National African American Insurance Association - I'm so proud of us! 1,057 people (plus the handful of you who snuck in - we saw you!), 2,700 members, 24 chapters and 81 Partners. We are stronger than ever before, and we are keeping this movement alive in our industry. It's Time! Let's GO!!! See you in Philadelphia! #NAAIA24 #NAAIAinNOLA

It's time, Let’s Go! My experience at the NAAIA conference this year in New Orleans was enriching, thought-provoking, and energizing. We kicked it off volunteering with Barbershop Books, Inc. Books, putting together bookshelves and filling them with books that young black boys enjoy and promote literacy for our future black men. Denise Hamilton gave a provocative keynote on Indivisible Leadership which emphasized the complexities of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) work. She hit us with nugget after nugget and led with the message that DEI is not easy, and we have to stop acting like it is! She went on to highlight the need for growth, flexibility, and optimism, stressing that leadership must allow people the space to develop as it pertains to inclusivity. She indicated that optimism is crucial for this work and pushed the idea that the only people who can change the world are those who believe they can. We had sessions on mental toughness and leadership, highlighting how leaders can cultivate a safe and inclusive environment, acknowledge specific challenges faced by Black employees, and foster psychological safety. Mentorship, sponsorship, and the role of Employee Resource Groups are critical in creating inclusive spaces in our workspaces. We had discussions about AI and racial bias which focused on how AI’s use could perpetuate bias if unchecked. It is important to explore how we can identify, mitigate, and prevent bias in AI systems. There is an urgent need for us to eliminate bias from data inputs to prevent flawed AI outputs, especially since AI is disproportionately affecting low-skill jobs where Black workers are overrepresented. The mental health discussion with Susan Johnson Johnson and Dr. Izzi brought up critical issues around mental health challenges facing Black workers, including the rising rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide, particularly in younger generations. The importance of mindfulness and cultural humility in validating people's feelings and addressing implicit biases were emphasized. We all have implicit bias and the key is for us to be AWARE of our specific bias so that we are cognizant of it to guard against it. This conference was packed with insights on how to navigate complex DEI landscapes, embrace the challenges, and push forward with purpose, optimism, and intention!
