Just 130 miles off our coast lies the first and only marine national monument off the continental United States, a place protected from most human harms. The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument is an incredible deep-sea wilderness that I’m lucky enough to have seen firsthand on research expeditions into its extreme underwater terrain. This World Oceans Day, read our very own Peter Auster's Op-Ed discussing the importance of the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument.

Happy World Ocean Day! From the smallest plankton to the largest whales, our oceans are teeming with amazing life. Let’s celebrate and protect these vital waterways for future generations. Below are some examples of how you can make a difference! Participate in a Beach Cleanup: Join a local group or organize your own to pick up litter and help keep our coastlines clean. Reduce Plastic Use: Avoid single-use plastics by opting for reusable bags, bottles, and containers. Support Sustainable Seafood: Choose seafood from sustainable sources to help protect marine life. Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about ocean conservation and share information with friends and family. Reduce Carbon Footprint: Use public transportation, cycle, or walk to reduce emissions. Participate in or Host Events: Attend virtual or in-person events, webinars, or workshops focused on ocean health. Advocate for Policy Change: Support policies and legislation aimed at protecting the oceans.

Last Friday, May 31 we had the honor to have staff from the American School for the Deaf visit us to walk campus in an effort to find ways to make Mystic Aquarium more inclusive to members of the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind community. They also gave us the opportunity to try out experiencing what it is like for guests with low vision or who are blind by wearing different specialty glasses. Thank you American School for the Deaf for helping us continue to improve our campus and be accessible to all guests!
