Gaza’s survivors face the mental challenge of ongoing acute stress - A lot of patients coming from Gaza to the Amman hospital are experiencing not only post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but even acute stress syndrome. Many young Palestinians have witnessed the destruction of their homes, the killing of their siblings, and some have even suffered horrific injuries. But on top of that, they are constantly hearing about the loss of more family members and friends. Adolescent patients who have suffered life-changing injuries will need long-term psychotherapy, as they don't only need help to get through the bad memories and traumas, but they need to be introduced to a new life. The goal is to support these kids so that they can love themselves and love life again, but they will need this psychotherapy for years to come to support them and to help alleviate the psychological effect of the traumatizing event that they have experienced. https://lnkd.in/ekTfZk64

15-year-old Abdul Rahman is one of the very few Palestinian children who was given permission to medically evacuate from Gaza— while most children and their caretakers' requests have been denied. After being critically injured on February 10 when an Israeli airstrike targeted him and his friends in northern Gaza, he was rushed to the Jordanian hospital in Gaza before being transferred to Baptist hospital where surgeons performed an emergency surgery that saved his leg. Abdul Rahman was then shuffled from one medical location to another until he was granted medical evacuation to a hospital in Cairo. A few months later, he was transferred to MSF’s hospital in Amman where he received another surgery. He now practices daily physiotherapy to encourage the healing of his bone and is slowly recovering. While our teams in Amman are treating the few Gazan children we have managed to transfer for rehabilitation after they were medically evacuated to Egypt, thousands remain trapped in Gaza. Israeli authorities need to approve more medical evacuations so patients can receive the specialized care they need. https://lnkd.in/eisy9cvD

At the US-Mexico border, MSF is providing essentials like hygiene products, food, water, and mental health support to people crossing into Arizona. Athena Viscusi is a clinical social worker in MSF’s psychosocial care unit working in Arizona. She shares, “The most relevant psychosocial intervention for most arrivals is psychological first aid—that includes meeting their immediate physical needs for food and rest, listening to them, and connecting them with necessary information.” Learn more about how we’re supporting migrants and asylum seekers traveling to the US: https://lnkd.in/eqSYSBhE

We are humanitarians, and we are health workers. Our priority is preventing the consequences of unsafe abortions. When people are denied access to safe abortion care, they are at higher risk of resorting to unsafe methods that can lead to severe or life-threatening complications. Safe abortion care is essential #healthcare.

Access to safe abortion care is a critical part of sexual and reproductive health care—and has a real impact on people's lives and health. Safe abortion care is an effective intervention to prevent maternal mortality and suffering. As part of our commitment to medical ethics and patient-centered care, our teams provide a range of sexual and reproductive health services to meet the needs of our patients. 💜 https://lnkd.in/e8JtuaTV

Does having an abortion affect your mental health? Let’s talk about it ⤵ The Turnaway Study published in 2020 discovered that relief was the most reported emotion after having a safe abortion—unlike the outcome of being denied an abortion, which has been shown to cause anxiety and lower self-esteem in the days that follow. In fact, women who received an abortion experienced higher self-esteem in the days that followed compared to women who were denied an abortion. Everyone comes to an abortion with different life experiences, but having an abortion does not cause depression. What can impact a person’s mental health after having an abortion is experiencing stigma and judgment from others in their life. It’s so important to show compassion for other people’s experiences, and not pass judgement on a person’s decision to have an abortion. 💜

This war will have lifelong physical and psychological effects on children in Gaza. What we are seeing is a war waged with few restraints, where mass mutilation and dispossession of children is being tolerated by states who claim to champion international law. During a high-level event hosted by Save the Children International on the sidelines of #UNGA79, we, at Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) / Doctors Without Borders renewed our call on all parties to the conflict — and on all United Nations member states — to remember their obligations to protect civilians and to shield the most vulnerable from the worst effects of war. Those who do not take action to protect children are complicit in their suffering.

Tomorrow, the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions will challenge why pharmaceutical corporations are charging outrageously high prices for diabetes medicines. 💊 There is a global demand for these lifesaving treatments. We need Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly and Company, and Sanofi to: 🔴 Drop diabetes medicines prices. 🔴 Stop blocking generic manufacturers from entering the market. https://lnkd.in/egDVm4J5
Diabetes medication must be made affordable and accessible: MSF

48 hours at the US-Mexico border: Dr. Belen Ramirez, an MSF project coordinator in Arizona, takes us along as she assists local volunteers providing aid. "I am accustomed to stories of hardship and fear, but I have never gotten used to hearing these stories from children who undergo this traumatic journey, especially those who travel alone." #health #migration #volunteers
