Michael Allen, 72, a grandfather from Queens, views tennis as more than just a game—it’s a way of life. He was playing every day when one sunny October day last year he nearly died after going into sudden cardiac arrest on the court. He was rushed into emergency heart surgery and is now back on the court —thanks to Jonathan Murphy, MD, an interventional cardiologist at Mount Sinai Queens, and Ahmed El-Eshmawi, MBChB, a cardiovascular surgeon at The Mount Sinai Hospital. He was excited to visit the US Open to celebrate his survival. “If I hadn’t been able to come back out, I’m not sure I would have wanted to live,” he tells CBS News while standing on the court in Astoria Park beside the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge. “To me, this is heaven.” As the Official Hospital of the #USOpen, Mount Sinai Health System is proud to stand behind champions like Michael, both on and off the court. Facing the challenges of a #cavernoma —a cluster of weakened blood vessels in the brain or spinal cord—this Mount Sinai patient demonstrated incredible strength and resilience. Although these 'berry-like' malformations are often present from birth, they can sometimes cause symptoms such as headaches or seizures. Advanced brain imaging helps us closely monitor and manage their condition with precision. Thanks to the comprehensive care of our Neurosurgery team, including System Chair Dr. Joshua Bederson, and Clinical Director Leslie Schlachter PA-C, this grateful patient is back on his feet and walking again! #WeFindAWay #neurosurgery #neurosurgeryawareness

Men’s mental health is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of overall well-being. Societal expectations and traditional norms frequently discourage men from expressing their emotions openly, fostering a culture where vulnerability is viewed as a weakness rather than a strength. Psychiatrist Dr. Sidney Hankerson, MD, MBA underscores that many men are taught to value stoicism and self-reliance from a young age, creating significant barriers to seeking help and addressing mental health struggles. To address this important issue, The HOPE Center in Harlem is hosting a free conference on Saturday, September 14th, sponsored by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the First Corinthian Baptist Church (FCBC). This in-person event will unite current and retired sports leaders, educators, mental health experts, and community partners with youth and youth leaders to explore innovative approaches to mental health within the sports community and beyond. Following the conference, the Wellness Fair on 116th Street will feature sports exhibitions, food, health insurance enrollment, and additional resources for families, promoting community well-being and resilience. Join us for this critical conversation and help support the mental health of men and their communities. To register: https://mshs.co/4cLaATM
