Need another reason to Raise the Age? Youth need time and support as they make the complex transition to adulthood, especially those caught up in the trauma-to-prison pipeline. Nationally, some 80% of people in prison were once in foster care! Rather than pushing our 18-year-olds who have just aged out of state care into adult system we need to serve them in our juvenile system which includes developmentally appropriate education and services. The Massachusetts Senate passed language to include our 18-year-olds in the juvenile system as part of their Economic Development bill and now we need the conference committee to include it in the final version. Join the fight and contact your legislator! https://rb.gy/adeddv #raisetheage #mapoli #traumatoprisonpipeline

Empowering system-involved young people to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business.
About us
More Than Words is a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. Youth at MTW earn a job working approximately 20 hours each week running every aspect of our $3.75M bookselling business, learning critical hard and soft job skills. All of our young people simultaneously hold an equally important “You Job” – personal transition planning and case management focused on ensuring they have all the necessary life essentials in place to move on to meaningful jobs and education. Graduates continue to receive support from Career Services Managers toward higher education, door-opening credentials, or growth-focused pathway employment for two years. More Than Words (MTW) believes that when system-involved youth are challenged with authentic and increasing responsibilities in a business setting, and are given high expectations and a culture of support, they can and will address personal barriers to success, create concrete action plans for their lives, and become contributing members of society. Legislation that would move our 18-year-olds from the adult justice system to the juvenile system in Massachusetts passed in the Senate and is now being considered by the conference committee of the Economic Development bill. In this final push, hear from the teams at More Than Words and UTEC about why Raise the Age matters to them! Why Raise the Age? Youth don't belong in adult jail - not according to brain science, not according to the data. The juvenile system is more developmentally appropriate, includes access to services and education, and doesn't hamper a young person with an adult criminal record. It is more effective for the commonwealth and it is the right thing to do for our youth. Take action! Contact your state representative and ask them to ask the conference committee to include Raise the Age. It's easy to send an email through our partner Citizens for Juvenile Justice: https://lnkd.in/euKsu3U8 #mapoli #raisetheage #nothingaboutuswithoutus

Yesterday the Massachusetts Senate passed Raise the Age legislation to keep our 18-year-olds out of adult prison! This important move has been a priority for our Power is Yours youth advocacy team for a long time for so many reasons: youth brains are continuing to develop long after they turn 18, the juvenile system has a lot more services and education opportunities, and it will save youth from picking up a CORI at a young age. Yesterday's senate vote was HUGE progress! Thank you Senate President Karen Spilka and champions Brendan Crighton, Senator Creem, Jamie Eldridge, Senator Rodrigues for making this happen for youth! Thank to also to our Waltham Senator Mike Barrett for your support of the amendment. Grateful to work alongside amazing partners like Citizens for Juvenile Justice UTEC, Mass Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence. Justice for youth! #raisetheage #raisetheagema #powerisyours #nothingaboutuswithoutus

Thank you Massachusetts General Hospital for including More Than Words and our transition-aged youth in your housing initiative! Up to 50% of the homeless youth population in Boston is coming right out of our child welfare system. Our project will focus on advocacy and direct programming to establish and grow models that help young people successfully transition to a stable adulthood: from transition plans to accessing vouchers to supported housing in one of our single room occupancy units for 2-3 years. Our youth need and deserve housing, health, career, and more! #housingishealth #wholepeoplegotowork
Construction of a new a state-of-the-art building on Mass General’s main campus, the Phillip and Susan Ragon Building, will result in a more than $62M investment in community health through the Massachusetts Determination of Need (DoN) process, the largest such investment in the Commonwealth’s history. These funds will be distributed over the next 8 years, and we are pleased to announce our first round of Community Health Impact Funding awards. 22 local non-profit organizations will receive $18 million to support affordable housing initiatives in Boston and North Suffolk County. “Housing insecurity and substandard housing are strongly linked to health conditions like cardiovascular disease, asthma and chronic stress,” said David Brown, MD, president of Mass General Brigham’s academic medical centers. “We are so pleased for the opportunity to invest in and partner with these community-based organizations offering life- and health-altering solutions to the housing crisis in Suffolk County.” These innovative proposals are focused on a variety of equity-based efforts including production and preservation of affordable housing, policy and advocacy, and eviction prevention. Learn more here: The organizations receiving these funds are: Boston Affordable Housing Coalition DBA Mass Alliance Of Hud Tenants (MAHT), Boston Tenant Coalition (BTC), Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Chinese Progressive Association - CPA Boston, Citizens' Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA), City Life Vida Urbana DBA Revival, Inc., City of Boston Mayor's Office of Housing, Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI), FamilyAid, Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS), GreenRoots, Inc., HarborCOV, HomeStart, Homes for All Massachusetts (HFA-MA), Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School, Madison Park Development Corporation, More Than Words, New England United 4 Justice (NEU4J), The Neighborhood Developers, Transgender Emergency Fund of MA, Urban Edge Housing Corporation , and Women's Lunch Place.
