Moore County Airport (KSOP), located just minutes away from Pinehurst and Southern Pines, North Carolina is the “Gateway to the Home of American Golf.” The premier general aviation jetport welcomes pilots and passengers to a destination that is rich in history, tradition, and true southern hospitality. The airport offers a full range of amenities and services for private aircraft, and provides flight training, aircraft maintenance and charter flight services. The airfield is open 24/7 and airport terminal operating hours are 8:00am to 8:00pm. The current runway is 6502 feet long and is 150 feet wide, accommodating aircraft sizes up to a Boeing 737.     On this day, July 8th, 1947, the first flight of the Boeing Model 377-10-19 Stratocruiser was conducted by Project Test Pilot John Bernard Fornasero. The Model 377 was a large, four-engine civil transport aircraft developed alongside the military C-97 Stratofreighter from the World War II B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber. It utilized wings and engines from the improved B-50 Superfortress. The aircraft had a flight crew of four and featured a double-deck design, with the flight deck, passenger cabin, and galley on the upper deck and a lounge and cargo compartments on the lower. The airliner was pressurized and could maintain sea-level atmospheric pressure while flying at 15,500 feet (4,724 meters). It could be configured to carry up to 100 passengers or 28 in sleeping berths. The Stratocruiser measured 110 feet, 4 inches (33.630 meters) in length, had a wingspan of 141 feet, 3 inches (43.053 meters), and an overall height of 38 feet, 3 inches (11.659 meters). It had an empty weight of 83,500 pounds (37,875 kilograms) and a maximum takeoff weight of 148,000 pounds (67,132 kilograms). The 377-10-19 prototype was powered by four air-cooled, supercharged Pratt & Whitney Wasp Major B5 four-row, 28-cylinder radial engines, each with a displacement of 4,362.49 cubic inches (71.49 liters). These engines had a Normal and Maximum Continuous Power rating of 2,650 horsepower at 2,550 r.p.m., and a Take Off Power rating of 3,250 horsepower at 2,700 r.p.m. with water/alcohol injection. Stratocruisers were equipped with Pratt & Whitney Wasp Major B6 engines, rated at 3,500 horsepower at 2,700 r.p.m. (with water/alcohol injection) for takeoff and a Normal Power of 2,650 horsepower at 2,550 r.p.m., at 5,500 feet (1,676 meters). The 377 had a cruise speed of 301 miles per hour (484 kilometers per hour) and a maximum speed of 375 miles per hour (604 kilometers per hour).     Who's ready for some history?! This weeks installation will follow the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, courtesy of historical articles and insights from KSOP Line Technician and Marine Corps Aviator, Barry R. Fetzer. "Perhaps there is no lingering aviation mystery greater than that of Amelia Earhart and her navigator’s, Fred Noonan, disappearance 87 years ago today. My mom was to be 9-years-old at the end of July in 1937 and she loved Amelia Earhart. She kept a scrap book of Earhart’s adventures reported in the newspapers. Mom wanted to be just like Earhart when she grew up. Never losing interest in Earhart’s example for women everywhere, mom maintained her curiosity about “Lady Lindy” (Lady Lindbergh) and “America’s Sweetheart” (as she was known) and Earhart’s disappearance for more than 80 years until her death in Ohio at 89 years of age back in 2017. One of our last conversations included a discussion of Earhart."     Grumman's solution to Cold War advancements in Soviet long-range patrol and bomber aircraft was the F-14 Tomcat. Equipped with AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, the F-14 could target multiple threats over 90 miles away. To achieve high speed while carrying heavy ordnance, Grumman incorporated a variable sweep wing, enabling operation across a range of airspeeds. The Navy sought an advanced carrier-based fighter and evaluated the F-111B by General Dynamics, aiming for commonality with the Air Force's F-111A. However, the F-111B was too heavy for carrier use, leading to its contract cancellation in April 1968. This prompted the VFX program competition between McDonnell Douglas and Grumman. McDonnell Douglas proposed a naval F-15, while Grumman's Model 303 featured a variable-geometry, two-seat, twin-engine design centered around the Hughes AWG-9 weapons system. Grumman’s experience with "swing-wing" technology from the XF10F Jaguar prototype was advantageous. The urgent development of the aircraft led to the use of Pratt & Whitney TF-30 turbofans, similar to those in the F-111. Following Grumman's tradition of naming aircraft after cats, the "Tomcat" had its first flight in December 1970. After modifications, the first F-14As were delivered to the Navy in June 1972, with VF-124 assigned for crew training. VF-1 and VF-2 were the first operational squadrons on the West Coast, while VF-14 and VF-32 were the first on the East Coast. In 1974, the Marine Corps planned to establish VMFA-122 at NAS Miramar but canceled the program, opting for modified F-4J Phantom IIs. The F-14’s combat debut was in August 1981, downing two Libyan Su-22 fighters over the Gulf of Sidra. It also saw action in the Gulf War, and in Iraq and Afghanistan. Fetzer. “'When World War II ended in 1945, defeated Germany was divided into Soviet, American, British and French zones of occupation. The city of Berlin, though located within the Soviet zone of occupation, was also split into four sectors, with the Allies taking the western part of the city and the Soviets the eastern. In June 1948, Josef Stalin’s government attempted to consolidate control of the city by cutting off all land and sea routes to West Berlin in order to pressure the Allies to evacuate. As a result, beginning on June 24 the western section of Berlin and its 2 million people were deprived of food, heating fuel and other crucial supplies.'"
