In the new “Bauhaus Typography at 100” exhibit at the Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies, located on the Aspen Institute campus, visitors get more than a history lesson—it’s an opportunity to immerse themselves in one of the most influential design and typographical movements in modern history. The six-part exhibition explores works by students and faculty, as well as pre- and post-era influences on the school. “Things that happened decades ago can have echoes across time,” said Rob Saunders, executive director of the San Francisco-based Letterform Archive. Modern In Denver Magazine
Book and Periodical Publishing
Colorado's Trusted Architecture, Art and Design Publication
About us
Modern In Denver is Colorado's leading design magazine celebrating commercial and residential architecture, art, interiors, and our creative community! We celebrate modern design and living in Colorado. But we balk at the walls of limitation that a title constructs! We’re much more than a magazine. MID is also a platform for discussing and exploring outside-the-box ways of living that are inspired by modern design and practices. And just what is modern? Well, we heard an ugly rumor that modern design connotes a cold and sterile environment. That particular brand of modern certainly may exist. But we’re friends with the type that greets you at the door with your house slippers and an honest mix of materials and methods. Modern can be comfortable, and we’re here to show you how. We think good design can be an integral part of real life right here in Denver. In fact, we’ve seen it. And we want to tell you about it. We find it important to connect the designs we feature to the particulars of our place, our community, and the people in it. This makes it real, practical and possible for great modern design to become part of your life.

The Cherry Creek home built by Boulder-based Surround Architecture gave the homeowners everything they asked for, and that’s easy to see just by exploring the home. But one feature you might miss (unless you know it’s there) is the speakeasy in the basement. Inspired by C.S. Lewis’ beloved Narnia stories, the room features plush materials and a welcoming Art Deco style. The room is hidden behind a pair of weighted bookcases and can seat up to 16 people. So far, the owners are using it for a standing game of cribbage, but its potential is limitless. It’s a great designer that understands the balance between providing privacy for residents indoors and making sure the outdoors can provide as much natural light as possible. That’s just one of the architectural achievements award-winning firm Level Ground Enterprise can boast of at the property at 2977 Forest Street in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood. The three-bed, three-bath home features everything from a statement kitchen to a secluded primary suite that includes a luxurious five-piece bath. Some other highlights in the home include a spacious rear patio, vaulted tongue-and-groove ceilings with exposed beams, and a blonde brick fireplace. The end result brings every carefully chosen detail into complete harmony. The home is listed by Clark Thomas at milehimodern for $1.625M. When owner Brooks Ferring first started thinking about what he wanted for his new home in the Tennyson neighborhood, he had three areas of focus: privacy, openness, and light. The home designed by Meridian 105 Architecture ended up being a complete scene stealer, not only due to its strikingly modern design, but for the deliberate angle of construction, which supports the three elements Ferring wanted. The diagonally-set upper story is the axis the design depends on and helps to maximize space on the small city lot. And by using materials that aren’t overly processed, the final result is a home that is approachable and enigmatic. Japanese style is well-known and much beloved by many for its elegant and simple design. It’s in that spirit that Boulder-based Surround Architecture was hired to capture for a couple living in Cherry Creek. By marrying the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi with modernism, the resulting home is an oasis that features everything from water features to a built-in speakeasy. Organic, handcrafted fabrication techniques were employed to give the house a truly unique and eye-catching aesthetic. The end result is both beguiling and calming — just what the owners wanted in a forever home. The impacts of Bauhaus typography on the art and design world are so prevalent that it’s easy to take for granted just how revolutionary the style was when it was first introduced a century ago. In “Bauhaus Typography at 100,” a new exhibit at the Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies, located on the Aspen Institute campus, visitors can explore the many uses of Bauhaus-created typography and learn about how its range of influences inspired designers all over the world. In our new summer issue we go behind the scenes of the exhibit and see what visitors can expect. It took a decade of work and attention to every detail, but together CCY Architects and Post Company have done more than update Aspen’s Mollie Hotel — they revitalized it. As we explore in the story in our new summer issue, CCY and Post redesigned the hotel with the Bauhaus approach in mind, thus keeping the structure in the style of the surrounding city. The spare approach allowed for the embrace of clean lines and an avoidance of over-ornamentation that is breathtaking when immersed in the building. “Thanks to our partnership with CCY, there’s a rigor in the integration of art, architecture, and design — and we’re weaving all of those things into the story of the building,” says Ruben Caldwell, partner at Post Company. The property created by Luke Klingensmith’s Level Ground Enterprise at 2977 Forest Street in Denver is a special one, thanks to the artful blending of mid-century modern aesthetics with modern Scandinavian simplicity. The three-bed, three-bath home features everything from a statement kitchen to a secluded primary suite that includes a luxurious five-piece bath. Homeowners looking for a property bathed in natural light will be drawn to the many windows and sliding doors, which invite the outdoors inside. Every design decision was carefully made to build a home in harmony with itself and its surroundings and the result is stunning.
