    🔖 She's here!! Fresh off the press at Critical Criminology is the new publication "Doomed by the Data? Latina/o/x Racialization and Sentencing Outcomes in Florida" written alongside my incredible collaborators Dr. Katie Durante of the University of Utah, and Dr. Cynthia Martinez of Rider University. While the data and analyses are focused on sentencing outcomes in the criminal #legal system, there are a few important take away points for #workforce dynamics. These insights align with trends we're increasingly seeing on the ground with our clients at ModelExpand, and include: ✴ Administrative data, including metrics captured for #EEOC reporting in the U.S., may be sufficient for compliance purposes but *insufficient for fostering employee belong.* ✴ When aiming to collect data on employee identity, operate from a *curiosity-rich* rather than *assumption-rich* frame. Provide employees the most expansive and empowering options possible to self-identify. Leverage #ERGs and #engagementsurveys to ask employees how they identify. ✴ For internal reporting (e.g., #datadashboards), consider how to aggregate self-reported categories to protect confidentiality while also ensuring, if possible, that categories are more #inclusive and #representative of your employee population than EEOC categories allow. For instance, the EEOC only has one category for Asian, but we've seen clients collect and report internally on the representation of East and South Asian team members in their headcount data. ✴ Remember, EEOC categories represent the floor, rather than the ceiling, with respect to ethnic and racial identity. Understanding and responding proactively to the nuance with which people understand their own humanity is critical.

    As the number and share of Black individuals in the United States population continues to grow, so too does the proportion of Black Americans who also identify as Latino/a/x. Estimates from Pew Research Center indicate that nearly 5% of Black Americans, or 2.5 million individuals, identify as Black and Latin American. This shifting demographic reality has significant implications for the workforce, especially as projections suggest continued growth in years to come among those identifying as multiracial and multi-ethnic. I recently partnered with my friend and collaborator Dr. Cynthia Martinez on an article in Latino Studies which explores the importance of acknowledging racial and ethnic intersectionality in adult learning experiences. The article’s insights suggest that attention to racial and ethnic intersectionality in organizations’ learning and development initiatives can further support the cultivation of inclusion and belonging among team members. While we often may think of intersectionality as pertaining to distinct demographic features such as sexual orientation and race, this article reminds us that it is also critical to consider that members of our workforce increasingly embody intersecting ethnic and racial identities, and those individuals deserve to be seen, heard, and recognized in their employers’ programs, language, and policies.
