Why don’t we just plant a bunch of trees? Why are wildfires getting worse? How many wind turbines does it to take to equal one nuclear reactor? These are some of the questions our climate change engagement team has answered for curious readers at the MIT Climate Portal. Engagement program director Laur Hesse Fisher and climate communications coordinator Aaron Krol talked about these questions, and what they can tell us about effective public communication on climate issues, to a sold-out audience at the Bloomberg Green Festival in Seattle last week. #BBGGreenFestival "We cater to what we call the climate curious," Laur said in her presentation. "These are people who are Googling, asking questions, or just want[ing] someone to hold their hand and explain what these things mean. We’re focused on providing them with what they need so they can make informed decisions in their world. But we know other folks need a totally different kind of approach. We also run a journalism fellowship for people who are not Googling about climate change. We support journalists across the country and local newsrooms who want to connect climate change science and solutions with the important things that are happening on the ground, in their communities already."
