About us

The MinKwon Center for Community Action was established in 1984 to meet the needs and concerns of the Korean American community through our five program areas: Education, Civic Participation, Immigrant Rights, Social Services, and Culture. Since our founding, we have made a profound presence in the Korean American community through various grassroots organizing, education, and advocacy initiatives that address important community issues, including immigration policies at the national, state and city levels, voter rights, and cultural awareness. MinKwon Center places a special emphasis on meeting the needs of our marginalized community members who have less access to resources, including the youth, the elderly, recent immigrants, low-income residents, and limited English proficient residents.

Updates

  • In just under two months, on the evening of Thursday, October 17th, the MinKwon Center for Community Action will celebrate 40 Years of Community Action at our 40th Annual Fundraising Gala. For the first time in MinKwon's forty years, we will be holding our annual gala in Manhattan instead of our home borough of Queens, signaling MinKwon's growth and expansion across the New York Metropolitan area. Mark the date, start thinking about your gala outfit, and be sure to claim your seat at the following link! https://lnkd.in/eWzPr4Kc

  • On Wednesday, August 14, MinKwon held a final session that marked the end of "A Korean’s Tale: 나의 미국 이민 이야기." Thanks to Sungmin of Hamilton-Madison House! Our Health Outreach Fellow Joo Young Jeon, writes, "The event concluded successfully, though everyone was saddened that it was over, and I’m surprised how quickly six weeks have passed. It was a great opportunity for me to learn about planning, coordinating, and facilitating an event. I hope to organize similar events in the future. Thanks to everyone for their support, and special thanks to [Managing Director] Yoon Ji Kim and [Administrative and Operations Associate] Jax Park for arranging the food for the final day. I’m also grateful to [Health Policy and Programs Coordinator] Hanna Jo and [Health Intern] Julia Lee for their support and assistance—I couldn’t have completed the event without you. Additionally, I appreciate Peter Lee for recording the videos for [Wednesday's] event, and thanks to staff who attended the showcase!"

  • The MinKwon Center for Community Action runs on the power of the community, and in turn, organizes and advocates to empower all of the members of our community. One of MinKwon's longtime community members has empowered MinKwon through a regular housing tour through Flushing, Queens that has guided participating pedestrians through our community. Thanks B for all of the tours throughout the years! This past Sunday, August 11, MinKwon Youth's Organizing Committee took on the responsibility of guiding a walking group through our community. We had 32 young people register and 28 people turn out to our event. The youth did an amazing job leading the tour as well as the follow-up discussion, and look forward to carrying on the legacy of the MinKwon Housing Walking Tour! The Organizing Committee's Housing Walking Tour is the finale in a workshop series, generously funded by Cornell University's Partnership Funding Board.
