About us
The mission of the Associations of Migraine Disorders is to raise the medical and general public’s awareness of this condition and to stimulate increased research in this area of neuroscience. Migraine Disorders are a spectrum of neurologic conditions which may have a common genetic and physiologic cause. Although most people associate a “migraine” with a headache, the same underlying faulty nerves that cause this head pain can also affect those nerves that line our sinuses, teeth and ears. This hypersensitivity of the nervous system can interrupt the normal way that we see the world, maintain our balance, hear, smell and taste. This problem may be affecting other parts of the brain that control our body temperature and our mood, our ability to sleep, to think and to remember. It may be the same neuropathy that causes fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, cyclic vomiting. Think of this problem as a malfunctioning electrical relay switch. The information from sensory nerves is being distorted, or overly amplified, on its way to the brain. That neural error may be an inherited defect which comes and goes throughout life depending on changing factors, such as hormonal shifts. Unfortunately, we cannot be sure of this explanation because this theory has not been widely considered among physicians and research of the nervous system is challenging and has not been well-funded.

❓Medical gaslighting is not... In the full episode of Spotlight On Migraine, Dr. Melissa Geraghty, Psy.D. highlights examples of medical gaslighting and offers suggestions for dealing with this challenging issue. Watch the full podcast or read the transcript at https://lnkd.in/enAWFZ6E TRANSCRIPT 👇 It's not medical gaslighting when a doctor provides a different diagnosis or perspective based on their expertise. Doctors may have different opinions, and it's not necessarily gaslighting. So seeking a second opinion is a valid choice if you're unsure. And it's also not automatically medical gaslighting when a doctor discusses lifestyle changes or mental health aspects of your condition. So addressing lifestyle factors or mental health doesn't diminish the validity of your physical symptoms. It's all part of comprehensive healthcare. However, it may be medical gaslighting if a doctor blames all the symptoms on something like weight or mental health without taking into consideration the whole person, right? And it's also not medical gaslighting when someone is just rude, or if someone is impolite or unfriendly, that's not automatically gaslighting. Remember gaslighting involves intentional manipulation to make you doubt your experience. And lastly, to your point about clearing, it's also not medical gaslighting when you disagree with your doctor. Disagreements are natural in healthcare, it's okay to have different opinions, and seeking open communication or a second opinion is a valid part of the medical process. So remember gaslighting involves intentional manipulation, not just a difference in perspective.

AMD's Executive Board Vice President, Dr. Shivang Joshi, is featured in a Drug Topics article. “It turns out that sometimes people are craving something sweet….and that craving is an early sign that the migraine is coming. It’s called the prodrome phase, or early phase, of a migraine. And so, when they eat something sweet [such as] chocolate and they have a headache, they attribute that headache with that sweet food component, but the reality was it was an early sign that the migraine was coming.” Read the full story at https://lnkd.in/eHjPFuGT

The Advancing Research for Chronic Pain Act, S.2922/H.R.7164 is focusing on people with pain. 🔍 Interesting findings! A recent study suggests a potential association between migraine or severe headache and acid-suppressing medications including proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs), and generic antacids. 💡 Key findings: 🧪 A study of over 11,000 US adults shows higher odds of migraine or severe headaches with acid-suppressing therapies: 70% higher for PPIs, 40% higher for H2RAs, and 30% higher for antacids compared to those not using these therapies. 💊 No significant differences between medication types were found. These results highlight the need for further research and evaluation of people with migraine who are using these medications. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eAqhr7BR
