Last week, we had the fantastic opportunity to participate in the UCLA Architecture and Urban Design department's graduate research studio led by Julia Koerner, titled “Fit for the Future 2.0: 3D Printed Sustainable Building Skins”. This studio focused on innovative building designs and fabrication methods in response to our mounting climate crisis. Mighty Buildings’ John Going joined other industry luminaries to mentor students, helping them bring their climate-forward visions to life. John worked closely with two students to leverage our LUMUS® material and large-scale printers for their 1:1 scale mockups, showcasing just one of several solutions built to enhance resilience and support a more sustainable future. From algae-covered buildings that cleanse the air to geometric facades that enhance ventilation, it was nothing short of inspiring to have a front-row seat to how the future of architecture is taking shape. Thank you for having us, Julia Koerner and UCLA! #UCLA #UCLAArchitecture #UCLAAUD #Architecture #UrbanDesign #FutureofConstruction #SustainableDesign #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #SustainableArchitecture #MightyBuildings

Last week, we were part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Innovative Housing Showcase in DC. It was an insightful event where we encountered various ideas propelling the future of construction. Notably, there was a consensus on the necessity for more industrialized construction, acknowledged both federally and on a state level. Here are four key takeaways: 𝟏. 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: HUD and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) underscored the importance of industrialized construction (IC), echoing Colorado Governor Jared Polis's emphasis on its role in affordability, speed, and sustainability. Jared's commitment to IC is evident in Colorado's recent announcement and their dedicated efforts in this domain. 𝟐. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐦: The construction industry's complexity and conservatism sparked diverse viewpoints. There's ongoing discussion about how startups integrate into the existing framework and the extent to which the industry needs modernization. 𝟑. 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Reflecting on experiences at Veev, Amit Haller shared insights on Wright's Law, illustrating how costs decrease with increased production. This underscores the need for more building projects to refine techniques, reduce expenses, and enhance efficiency. 𝟒. 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐬: Achieving true innovation necessitates building codes that prioritize safety while accommodating speed, flexibility, and creativity. Balancing these elements is pivotal for fostering innovation in construction. Let's collectively explore how we can further drive innovation in construction.
