Our Family Services Coordinator, John Michael Segars, Pharm.D., had the honor of moderating a session at the 32nd Annual Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT) Conference in San Diego. John Michael Segars led the session, "Culture Shifts and Vulnerability: Support in Communities Starts at Home." This session emphasized the importance of learning culture at home and embracing differences, creating inclusive spaces in the workplace and bringing more LGBTQIA voices into the donation and transplantation industry narrative. We're proud to be part of this important movement, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard in our mission to save lives through organ donation. Also pictured are Midge Dempsey (Family Services II), John Michael Segars (Family Services III), Lisa Tebb MSN (Ed), PN, RN (Hospital Services III), and Salama Gallimore (In-House Counsel)—our MTN team members who attended the conference to learn more about how we can better serve diverse communities. #GiveHopeShareLife

A powerful message from Dr. Michael Moncure on the life-saving impact of organ donation and the importance of diversity in health care. Dr. Moncure, trauma and critical care surgeon at University Health KC and Administrative Medical Director at Midwest Transplant Network, shares his experiences and the challenges of addressing the critical shortage of organ donors, particularly in diverse communities. In his op-ed that appeared this week in The Community VOICE, he emphasizes the need for transparency, trust and advocacy to overcome the deep-seated mistrust in health care that affects Black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander communities. He also reflects on his journey in organ donation advocacy, inspired by his mentor, Dr. Clive O. Callender, MD, a pioneer in transplant education and outreach, who we featured earlier this month. #GiveHopeShareLife Dr. Moncure's full op-ed can be read here: https://lnkd.in/gmkuqve2

The NKCH MLS students School of Medical Laboratory Science - North Kansas City Hospital spent the day with MTN staff learning about organ, eye, tissue, and bone marrow donation. The MTN laboratory is an FDA-registered donor testing facility, and it is accredited by CLIA, ASHI and CAP. Services include histocompatibility testing (antibody detection, ABO blood grouping/subgrouping, A1 titer, flow cytometry crossmatching, molecular HLA typing and chimerism testing), as well as infectious disease donor screening. #GiveHopeShareLife

We are thrilled to have our team representing Midwest Transplant Network at this year's The Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT) Conference, themed "Empower, Engage, Elevate: Fostering an Inclusive Donation and Transplant Community." Our very own Salama Gallimore, General Counsel and Advisor on Governmental Affairs, along with attorney Jeff Hochstetler, co-presented the powerful session, "Equity in Transplantation: Recent Oversight Updates." During this plenary session, Gallimore discussed recent litigation and OPTN/UNOS policy revisions enacted to address discrimination against Black American patients awaiting transplants, and she reviewed proposed changes to the HOPE Act targeted to increase the number of organs available for transplant in HIV patients. MTN is proud to contribute to this important conversation on diversity, equity, and inclusion in transplantation, working to ensure that all communities have access to life-saving care. #GiveHopeShareLife #AMAT2024
