When I joined Mid-Hudson Energy Transition back in January as a Clean Energy Programs Assistant, I was pivoting from a very different background. With eyes wide open and a hunger for knowledge, I dove into this new industry. My coursework from Columbia University's Sustainability Management MS program foreshadowed what I now have a first-hand understanding of: 🏙 Buildings (in all shapes and sizes) need to radically decarbonize in order to achieve our city, state, and country level goals to reach a more sustainable society. 🏙 What is often left out of this narrative, however, is the importance of bringing everyone along on this transition to an energy efficient and healthier world. At MHET, we seek to find solutions that connect low-income and communities of color with the funding they often desperately need to upgrade their homes to be more energy efficient, free of health hazards, and resilient to the climate emergencies that are on the horizon. Last month, our Home Upgrade Grants program received over 80 applications from Kingston homeowners to receive grant money for health and safety issues like lead, mold, and asbestos, deferred maintenance, and energy efficiency work that cannot be financed through any other state or federal programs, but we only have 30 grants to give. That's why I've created a fundraiser to support our work at Mid-Hudson Energy Transition. With your help, we hope to provide FREE project management support to 20 additional families in Kingston, New York. Our very own Connor Cantrell was quoted in this article talking about the new CCA program! He explained that while there’s no guarantee of a lower rate than Central Hudson every month, a CCA can help with budgeting by providing more stable energy prices. This is crucial when energy prices suddenly spike, as seen in 2022 when Central Hudson bills went up by 46%. This comes as NY judges recommend a 16.7% rate rise for Central Hudson, pending approval. The Rhinebeck Village Board is considering a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) program for renewable electricity. Residents will be automatically enrolled, but can opt out anytime. The Village is looking at proposals from Joule and MHET, although MHET is still awaiting their CCA administrator status from the NY Public Service Commission.
