Together, we build, transform, revitalize, and protect accessible waterfronts for all communities.

About us

After more than a decade of leading the charge in how the New York metropolitan region views and uses its harbor, and with more than 1,000 Alliance Partners committed to bringing real change to our region’s 700 miles of coastline, in 2019 the Waterfront Alliance stepped into a new and critical leadership role to define New York Harbor’s response to sea level rise and coastal storms. Our crucial, long-term focus on increasing waterfront accessibility for all, along with our efforts to advocate for a working waterfront that is a vital source of business activity and well-paying jobs and educating the next generation of waterfront stewards, continue as essential pillars of our work to create a well-adapted and resilient New York Harbor. Together, we build, transform, revitalize, and protect accessible waterfronts for all communities.

"This is it—the final days of the 2024 Presidential Election on the heels of major climate impacts this fall, here and abroad. And yet, THE game plan for how to climate prepare the United States is sadly missing from the firestorm of commentary and speeches. The next administration has a critical opportunity to drive local action where it counts by passing the National Coordination on Adaptation Resiliency for Security Act, or NCARS, (S.3261/H.R.6311), which would create a proactive national resilience strategy—and so much more." Read more in the recent op-ed from Waterfront Alliance president and CEO, Cortney Koenig Worrall, featured in NYN Media. https://lnkd.in/gWrcY8-r

Our infrastructure is not prepared to withstand the impacts of climate change. From extreme rainfall, extreme heat, hurricanes, and sea level rise—the state is currently experiencing and projected to experience more frequent and more intense climate threats. We need key policy solutions NOW! We strongly urge our New York state legislators to prioritize climate resilience efforts and pass The Rain Ready NY Act and The Climate Resilient NY Act in the next legislative session. Sign your support and urge your local State Senator and Assembly Member to co-sponsor these bills and get them passed in the 2025 Legislative Session! https://lnkd.in/eB5uDzZC #Rise2Resilience #ClimateResilienceSolutions2025

It's time to connect Staten Island and Brooklyn with a new #NYCferry route! Waterfront Alliance is an advocate for expanding NYC ferry service, and one of the most important potential routes is service between St. George and Bay Ridge. Though ties between these communities are strong, residents currently have no way to travel between boroughs without a car. This ferry route would also serve to reduce traffic on the Verrazzano Bridge and relieve congestion on streets and buses. Waterfront Alliance strongly supports the St. George Civic Association, Bay Ridge Environmental Group, and other advocates and residents calling for this necessary ferry connection. Join us and sign your support for a ferry from Staten Island to Brooklyn: https://lnkd.in/g-mVDEpE

During Climate Week NYC, we were thrilled to partner with the Climate Film Festival in its inaugural year. In partnership with the Seaport Museum, we hosted a truly unique Climate Week event: a screening of WindShipped aboard the historic Wavertree ship. We were also grateful to be part of the Solutions Hub, which brought together partners working on diverse climate initiatives. The event highlighted how storytelling can both inspire action and connect people with real opportunities to make a tangible impact. Thank you to the Climate Film Festival for this amazing partnership, and we're excited to continue to work together in the coming year!

Today, it's been 12 years since Hurricane Sandy. On Sunday, our director of resilience, Tyler Taba, WEDG, spoke with Rocco Vertuccio on NY1 News about the progress that has been made since the storm. In this post, Tyler outlines concrete actions that have been taken, from resiliency projects to creation of new government offices and positions to combat climate change. Check out his interview at the link below!

Director of Resilience at Waterfront Alliance

Today marks 12 years since Hurricane Sandy. I spoke with Rocco Vertuccio on NY1 News about what progress has been made since the Sandy displaced and devastated our communities in New York and New Jersey. So much still to be done, but we have made some progress— The East Side Coastal Resiliency Project (ESCR) is moving toward completion, led by the NYC Department of Design and Construction. More than 120,000 residents will be protected by a real signature urban coastal resilience project. ESCR earned Waterfront Alliance's coveted WEDG (Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines) verification. We're thrilled to see projects like these continue to be funded, and strongly encourage prioritizing similar time and investment for communities in The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Since Sandy, lots of good governance and planning has happened— • The NYC Office of the Mayor now has a permanent office of Climate and Environmental Justice. • The City has a Chief Climate Officer to help lead that office and the broader climate goals. We're lucky to have Rohit Aggarwala's leadership and vision in that role. • The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP) established a Bureau of Coastal Resilience to handle operations and maintenance of the City's coastal resilience projects and portfolio. We're lucky to have Laurian Farrell's leadership and vision in that role. And, the US Army Corps of Engineers has been working on a major infrastructure project, known as the NY-NJ Harbor and Tributaries Study (or HATS). Waterfront Alliance and the #Rise2Resilience Coalition have been working with the Army Corps to advocate for the best solutions to protect our communities from climate change.
