Web3 needs more developers. The good news is developer activity is soaring. Last year, smart contracts created on Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, Arbitrum, and Optimism shot up 303% YoY. Ethereum SDK installations rose for their fifth year in a row, up 31%. The number of experienced web3 devs is also on the rise: those with over a year’s experience grew 16%. Those with 2 years, 52%. Meanwhile, learning tracks such as Coinbase’s Base Camp are helping to onboard crypto-proficient web2 devs in droves. But there’s a catch. Despite all these positive trends, web3’s share of the total developer community is still only 1-2%. That’s a BIG talent gap. In order to attract more devs we need to address some core issues: > Basic needs: Devs shouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to things like data availability and atomic transactions. They should have reliable, out-of-the-box solutions that enable them to focus on innovation rather than infrastructure. > Funding: The majority of projects are overly reliant on outside grants (without which devs can’t be paid competitive salaries). The solution isn’t necessarily more funds, but better funding. Smart incentive models - e.g. token-based rewards and profit-shares - should be the norm. > Tooling: So much of the tooling that devs leverage in web2 is simply missing. CI and testing for example is a major weak point. We need to invest in better tooling, especially for new languages and vm ecosystems. > Counterparty risk: Web2 devs are accustomed to working with mostly stable systems. In web3 however, just one bridge going down or even a delay can be devastating. We need to improve the ability to safely build and deploy cross-chain, i.e. cross-chain message passing must be improved. What would you add? P.S. - Mesh is always on the lookout for new developers.
