St. Joseph Warren Hospital (Warren, Ohio) recently held a blessed double anniversary celebration for the entire team. The celebration recognized the Sisters of the Humility of Mary 170th anniversary and St. Joseph Warren Hospital’s 100th anniversary. The celebration event was held in the St. Joseph Warren Hospital Healing Garden the day before Humility of Mary Day on July 17. Humility of Mary Day is a central celebration for the Sisters of the Humility of Mary. It marks the anniversary of when, in 1854, the Sisters of the Humility of Mary were founded. This event featured a much-anticipated opening of 1980’s capsule and burying 2024 capsule. Some of the special items unearthed in the historic capsule included: • 1953 annual report book • A 1954 St. Joseph Newsettte pamphlet • 1954 list of Sisters • Copies from the Warren Tribune • An employee recognition dinner program • Project 80s expansion program for the old St. Joseph Riverside Hospital • A rooster of employees in 1981 • Inside Riverside newsletter publications • 1980s annual report • Various nursing pins and religious charms and medals for uniforms The team enjoyed selecting items to include in the 2024 capsule for future generations to find, they selected items including our Weekly Huddle newsletters, anniversary items including a tumbler, an employee badge and clip, prayer cards and programs, a onesie from the solar eclipse and Mercy Health solar sunglasses and a proclamation from the City of Warren and several nursing Magnet pins. A Mass was held followed by a special “Visit with the Sisters” reception. The team was grateful for this special event to give thanks for the Sisters of the Humility of Mary as such a special community of women. Our rich tradition as a Catholic Health ministry recognizes their legacy and building on their good work is an important part of who we are. Together we celebrated their essential legacy at St. Joseph Warren Hospital and the vital role of the hospital in serving our community for the past 100 years.

We asked Vincent Matthews, Director of Mission at Mercy Health – St Charles Hospital (Toledo, Ohio) , about what our mission means to him. Here’s his heartfelt response: “Our mission is to extend the compassionate ministry of Jesus… The word compassion, a core value, is committing to be present in suffering. Our mission responds to suffering by meeting a person’s needs with genuine respect, kindness and understanding. Compassion is not just a feeling – it requires action. The mission means to promote human dignity, life, spirituality, and provide support to people of all faiths, backgrounds, and ethnicities. I uphold the mission by being a compassionate listener and doing everything in my power to help. I believe that every patient deserves the best care, regardless of their life circumstances and resources. I strive to live our mission daily!”

Our society can try to convince us that life is about ourselves. In this “Mission Moment,” it is helpful to be reminded that true happiness flows, not from focus on self, but through the relationships we develop and the purpose of a better world we can pursue together. At Mercy Health, our Mission extends compassionate care beyond the walls of our hospitals and medical facilities. We are committed to providing good help to those in need no matter the time or the place. We’d like to share encouraging and inspiring quotes on our social media channels. It is our hope that these "Mission Moments" will provide you with encouragement no matter where you are in life. #MissionMoments

Today marks the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn police raids in New York City, which served as a catalyst to paving the way toward equality for the LGBTQ community. At Bon Secours/Mercy Health, we strive to provide a culture where all are welcome. Our commitment to fostering an inclusive ministry helps us better connect with our patients, communities, partners and each other. This commitment, rooted in our value of Human Dignity, reflects our belief that every person is a treasure, every life a sacred gift, every human being a unity of body, mind and spirit. We share this prayer from The Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA). https://bit.ly/3NsBu8E

We commemorate Juneteenth as a ministry committed to human dignity and equality and reflect on this day with this prayer. God of liberation, Today we celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in America. Open our eyes that we might recognize in each other sisters and brothers with a common origin and a shared destiny. May this great celebration of liberty and life inspire us to continue the work of justice and freedom, pursuing and promoting the dignity of all. We pray in the name of God who strengthens us in our quest for love and light. Amen.
