About us
Mental Health Association Oklahoma, formerly known as Mental Health Association in Tulsa, is an advocacy voice representing people affected by mental illness, homelessness and substance abuse. Since 1955, we have spoken as an independent source to mental health and substance abuse providers, social service agencies, schools regarding the provision of high quality mental health screening and treatment in the community. Our current programs include mental health education to schools, businesses, and the broader community, mental health advocacy addressing prejudice and discrimination directed toward people living in recovery with mental illness, support groups, pro bono counseling, referral and assistance to people experiencing mental health needs, mental health screening, suicide prevention, and crisis response to schools. We also provide peer-to-peer recovery counseling, transitional employment, and housing and support services for people affected by substance abuse, mental illness, release from incarceration and homelessness. These programs all start with advocacy for the people we serve.

Many thanks to Dick Tanenbaum and his wife, Glenna, who made a significant contribution that will have a lasting impact on the lives those experiencing homelessness. The Tanenbaum's donation has funded the expansion of the patio at Lottie House, our peer-run drop-in center in Oklahoma City, transforming it into a multifunctional space that serves as both a heating and cooling station. Last year, Lottie House had more than 16,000 knocks on the door in 2023. This new facility is a critical addition to our center, providing a safe and comfortable refuge for individuals experiencing homelessness, especially during extreme weather conditions. #lottiehouse #endhomelessness #housinghealingwholeness

Part 2 (scroll back to yesterday if you missed Part 1): Meet Megan: She spent twelve years navigating the unforgiving streets, battling addiction and facing the consequences of her choices. She moved from homelessness to prison and back again, but she refused to let her past define her. Despite the hurdles, Megan found stability through employment while she lived in an abandoned building and worked hard to face her legal obligations head-on, committed to paying her fines and working with MHAOK toward stability. With the diligence of our Street Outreach team and Megan’s dedication to integrity and hard work, she got the keys to her own place, leaving the shadows of her past behind as she stepped into the light of a hopeful future. #endhomelessness #housinghealingwholeness #strongertogether #mhaok #streetoutreach Tulsa Street Outreach is funded in part by the Geoge Kaiser Family Foundation and the Hardesty Family Foundation.

A Better Way is our employment program that offers not only an alternative to panhandling, but an opportunity to gain permanent employment. Our employment specialists cultivate relationships with local decision-makers to help advocate for its participants, and our case managers assist with obtaining vital documents necessary for employment, as well as referrals to other services and programs that can help those in need begin to thrive - truly offering "a better way." #mhaok #endhomelessness #housinghealingwholeness
