The Childbirth Center at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center recently installed an innovative infant safety system developed by CertaScan Technologies that captures newborn footprints that can be used for precise identification in situations that might cause separation between the parent and baby.   “Since the program’s inception, parents have loved the extra measure of safety, as well as the special footprint keepsake they get to take home with them,” says Jennifer Ayala, director of maternal child health services. “You never want to think something terrible can happen to separate you from your child, and although the chances are slim, we are finding that parents are thankful to have a system there to help should the need arise.”   The Childbirth Center at Orange Coast Medical Center is a dedicated center for expectant women, providing compassionate quality health throughout the birthing journey. We are proud to share that MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center has been awarded the Quality & Sustainability Award: NTSV Cesarean Birth Rate and the Maternal Data Center (MDC) Superstar Award for Medium Birth Volume Hospitals from the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC). The CMQCC is an organization focused on reducing morbidity, mortality, and racial disparities in California maternal care. The information provided by Orange Coast Medical Center and other participating hospitals supports the development of performance metrics, statewide benchmarks, and evidence-based quality improvement initiatives to reduce preventable morbidity, mortality, and racial disparities in maternity care. “Our care team takes the time to minimize any health disparities by providing comfort, education, and breaking down cultural and language barriers so our patients have an exceptional maternal care experience,” says Jennifer Ayala, director of maternal child health services at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center. “When we partner together to remove fear patients may have when seeking health care, we demonstrate a level of trust and respect needed in any encounter. Receiving recognitions such as the Super Star Award and the Quality & Sustainability Award from CMQCC is an honor and proof of our dedication to our patients.” Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gJHpRXah

Last week, the MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute at Long Beach Medical Center was the first hospital in Southern California to implant a 35mm Abbott Titan Navitor Valve during a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure. The TAVI procedure is crucial for patients who have severe aortic stenosis, a disease that narrows the valve between the heart and the aorta, and are at extreme risk for open-heart surgery. This device is different from other heart valves on the market as it has been shown to greatly improve the blood flow of patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis, helping their hearts resume normal, healthy blood flow performance quickly. Bob was feeling a consistent, sharp pain in his abdomen. Following imaging tests and a biopsy, Bob was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Large B-cell Lymphoma. Within days of meeting Dr. Wael Harb, medical oncologist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center, Bob had a bone marrow extraction, CT scan, heart MUGA scan, and a chest port implanted so that he could start chemotherapy later that week. After six rounds of chemotherapy, Bob’s cancer is now in remission.   “Dr. Harb saved my life,” said Bob. “Prior to my diagnosis, things were moving slowly but once I found Dr. Harb, he got things moving quickly and treated my diagnosis with urgency. He was my advocate and fought for me throughout my treatment. He and his team made me feel like I was more than just a number.”   Bob is now back to enjoying life with his family and continues to receive follow-up scans to ensure his cancer stays in remission.

While at the eye doctor, 74-year-old John Zaragoza suffered from cardiac arrest. His nephew performed CPR until the paramedics arrived and transported him to MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center. He received a mechanical CPR device, multiple medications and defibrillation hopes of restoring John’s heartbeat through an electric charge. Still, he was not showing any return of blood circulation. Dr. David Shavelle, interventional cardiologist and chief of cardiology for MemorialCare, decided to start extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy, an advanced form of life support targeting the heart and lungs. He also placed a stent to open the blocked vessel which ultimately saved John’s life. John is recovering well and is healthier than ever. He is down 100 pounds, walking, and enjoying life.

The Los Angeles Angels partnered with our maternity center teams across our health care system to make Father's Day one to remember for dads who recently welcomed a child. Dads were gifted a baseball with their baby's footprint on it as a special reminder of their first Father’s Day together. Wishing all the dads out there a very special and wonderful Father's Day! #memorialcare #orangecoastmedicalcenter #saddlebackmedicalcenter #fathersday #firstfathersday #happyfathersday
