Thank you to everyone who supported the 25th Annual Team Spirit Long Beach Cancer 5K. We have raised over $168,000 to fund critical support services for patients and their families offered at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Medical Center. These free services are available to anyone in the community, regardless of where they're receiving treatment. Also a huge shoutout to our cheer section including Los Angeles Angels pitcher Kenny Rosenberg and members of the Angels Strike Force. “Team Spirit Long Beach is more than just a fundraiser,” said Dr. Mariusz Wirga, medical director of psychosocial oncology at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute. “It’s a celebration of life and a time to honor those touched by cancer. At the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute, we understand that cancer is not just a physical challenge – it’s a journey of the mind and spirit. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gSdx3esg

In 2011, Roneka was diagnosed with breast cancer. After undergoing treatment, she thought she was in the clear, and with each follow-up exam, she allowed herself to breathe a little easier. However, in 2023, the cancer returned and she sought a second opinion at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Medical Center. “From the moment I walked in, there was a warmth and understanding I hadn’t felt before,” said Roneka. “They listened to me, not just as a patient but as a real person who already had hope…. I just needed a good, solid plan to follow and a safe space to share my concerns. In their care, I felt safe. And my hope multiplied. I needed to feel like I was supported by a team that genuinely cared about me, and that’s precisely what I found.” Her second diagnosis challenged her physically, but through it all Roneka never felt alone. Now, as a two-time breast cancer survivor, Roneka provides support to other women who may be facing a cancer diagnosis. “I’m honored to be a mentor in the Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support & Education mentor program,” said Roneka. “To be a voice of reassurance for other women facing this diagnosis, to tell them that they will get through it no matter how hard it gets. We all have incredible strength within us, and sometimes, we need someone to remind us of that.”

Following back surgery at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center, Michael Miranti received post-surgical care from our physical therapists (PTs). Our PTs helped him learn how to walk safely with his walker and taught him techniques to help protect his back while recovering. The care didn’t stop there, our team also ensured that his wife, Teri, was equipped to care for him when they returned home. “The team was great at explaining things,” said Teri. “They were very patient and thorough. I appreciated that so much, as when we got home I wanted to do my best to care for him. There is no doubt in our minds that we would choose to go back to Saddleback Medical Center again for any future health needs. Our hospital-based rehabilitation programs offer a broad range of services, from physical, occupational and speech therapies to more specialized programs. With treatments tailored to the individual patient's needs, the goals are to maximize movement potential and long-term wellness to speed recovery, decrease pain and help a patient return to an active, healthy lifestyle with high-quality treatment, exercise, support, and education.

MemorialCare employees were invited to attend women’s volleyball and soccer games in support of our new partnership with Long Beach State Athletics to emphasize our mantra of “One Community. One Team.” MemorialCare and Long Beach State have worked together for decades to overcome health inequities and transform health education through our graduate residency program at Long Beach Medical Center. Innovative work force training has positively impacted MemorialCare with over 800 current employees being CSULB graduates. The teaching clinic on campus scheduled to open Spring 2026 will bring additional resources and opportunities for students and the community to receive high-quality care and training.
