StimLabs secures first 510(k) for birth tissue #woundcare solution. Placental tissue allograft start-up StimLabs gains market clearance for Corplex P, a particulate product well-suited for wounds with irregular geometry. The company’s original patented technology, Clearify, enables donor tissue to be cleaned and prepared in a gentle, yet effective, way to retain its wound-healing properties while removing unwanted constituents and blood remnants. It is the basis for StimLabs’ portfolio of office- and hospital-based products. In the absence of a technology with sufficient sensitivity to obtain clinically meaningful coagulation data, the Perosphere Technologies team devised one in-house, eventually developing a universal point-of-care coagulometer free of chemical or biological reagents, so as not to limit its specificity to a particular drug class (See Figure 1 below).   The Perosphere coagulometer is cleared for marketing in Europe, but it is not yet cleared in the US. The Class II device uses 14 microliters of blood (about one drop) as input to return a value of coagulation time, reflecting the duration it takes for a fibrin clot to form. A time interval exceeding the expected or normal range indicates therapeutic anticoagulation, with the device measuring the action of drugs in the bloodstream in an intuitive way. The solution is drug-agnostic and works with DOACs as well as low molecular weight heparins and warfarin, and Perosphere’s proprietary clotting time assay will later be joined on the technology platform by a lysis time assay, which will measure the time it takes a clot to break down. According to Sasha Bakhru, the coagulometer was originally designed for the hospital setting, but the CEO also envisions measuring clotting time in an outpatient setting once or twice per year to screen high-risk patients before an emergency occurs. Perosphere Technologies, founded in 2011 by Sasha Bakhru, PhD, initially aimed to develop a reversal agent for direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Realizing the need for better #coagulation measurement, the team created a universal point-of-care coagulometer. This device, cleared for marketing in Europe, uses a small blood sample to measure clotting time, aiding in the management of anticoagulant therapy. The coagulometer, intended for both hospital and outpatient use, addresses the risks associated with DOACs, particularly in high-risk patients. Perosphere Technologies is currently fundraising and supported by pharmaceutical partnerships and NIH grants. POP QUIZ: Data from an early feasibility study covering the first 15 high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) patients was presented at TCT 2023, with no device-related adverse events reported, including hypotensive episodes and thromboembolism. ANSWER: In the Magenta study, patients received mechanical circulatory support (MCS) from Elevate during PCI and showed an average increase in cardiac ejection fraction of 10% from intake to discharge. Magenta Medical Ltd. Chairman and CEO David Israeli, MD notes that ejection fraction is a measure of native cardiac function, saying, “Any increase in ejection fraction suggests a trajectory of improvement in cardiac muscle function, which is a result of the PCI and the degree of unloading provided by the pump.” #medicaldevices #medtech
