Working to be the trusted health plan of choice.

About us

At Medica, we are committed to earning the trust of those we serve through our unwavering commitment to high quality, affordable health care. We are a nonprofit health plan that serves communities in Minnesota, Arizona, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming. As a company, we empower communities by listening to their voices, learning about community needs, and devoting time and resources to help. Medica partners with the communities it serves in many ways, including the Medica Foundation, a nonprofit, charitable grant-making foundation. The Medica Foundation largely funds community-based programs and initiatives that provide sustainable, measurable improvements in the availability, access, equity and quality of health care. In 2021, we formed a joint venture with SSM Health, and through that invested in Dean Health Plan. Medica and Dean Health Plan, both mission-driven health plans, have significant similarities in our histories, operations, cultures, and deep community commitment. Our new relationship is driven by technology, a mission driven vision, and innovation. Together we have an even greater opportunity to support the health care needs of members and patients, and to further enhance our provider relationships. From Duluth to the Twin Cities, Nebraska and Madison, WI our teams spent this week volunteering at food banks across our hubs to support the issue of food security for people in need. Thank you to Second Harvest Heartland, Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin, and COPE in Omaha for inviting our employees to sort and pack food up for our communities! This is all part of our Acts of Impact Volunteer program Medica--which supports our community partners through volunteer hours, monetary gifts, service projects, and donation drives for food, supplies, and more! #FoodSecurity #CorporateVolunteering #MedicaInTheCommunity

The benefits of outdoor 🏞 time for children are well-documented: better mental and physical health, and reduced anxiety. “Time spent outdoors is essential for children,” said Dr. Ken Schellhase, a Senior Medical Director with Medica. “It’s not just for the physical health; it helps alleviate stress and is critical to their overall development.” Yet, the lure of video games, streaming TV 📺 , and social media often keep kids indoors. The statistics are alarming-- read more in our latest blog post ⬇

🎊 🎉 Exciting news from our Board of Directors! We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Ugwuji Maduekwe has been named to Medica’s Board of Directors. 🔳 Dr. Maduekwe is an associate professor of surgery and director of regional therapies in the division of surgical oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee—she also serves as deputy director of, “Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment.” 🔳 Dr. Maduekwe was educated at the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology, trained as a general surgeon at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital, and as a surgical oncologist at the University of Pittsburgh. Recently our Medica Salutes ERG (Employee Resource Group) along with members of our Medicaid County Engagement team volunteered at CAPI USA - Immigrant Opportunity Center to hand out fresh produce 🌽 🍎 🥔 to folks in need. CAPI USA - Immigrant Opportunity Center operates a farmer's market through the summer and fall-- Medica is a proud community partner of this initiative in our desire to help all families have access to nutritious food!

Members of our Medicaid team spent an afternoon volunteering at Bridging MN. They built furniture and sorted/inspected bed linens. Bridging MN is one of Medica’s longstanding community partners. They empower people to thrive in their homes by providing quality furniture and household goods for those pursuing housing stability. Bridging has supported many Medica members and their families over the years.   Bridging MN is currently in great need of new or lightly used bed-sized blankets and comforters for clients. They provide more than 600 comforters per week to families in our communities!   Special thanks to Medica team member Shelley Lano, MGS, LSW, CCM who organized the event and has supported the Bridging partnership over the years.
