Did you know that lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S.? To help spread awareness, John Forstall, DO, a pulmonologist at Maury Regional Medical Group Pulmonology & Critical Care, joined 40 members of the community last Friday, July 19 at Kiwanis Club of Columbia to present lung cancer risk factors and screening steps. Risk factors include smoking (including secondhand smoke), radon, heavy metals (like chromium or arsenic) and some occupational exposures (paint, rubber or coal). Many insurances cover a CT lung screening; however, patients should always contact their insurance company for verification of coverage and benefits. CT lung screening qualifications include being aged 50-77, having no signs or symptoms of lung cancer, have a tobacco smoking history of at least 20 pack-years (one pack-year = smoking one pack per day for one year; 1 pack = 20 cigarettes) and being a current smoker or one who has quit in the last 15 years. Individuals or loved ones that fit these criteria and meet CT lung screening qualifications should ask their primary care provider for a referral. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eDiBaxKz

Formerly known as Java Junction, we recruited our employees to help give our restaurant its new name and the winner would receive one free meal per shift for one year. 🏆Congratulations to Jenna Avery, RN, for her winning submission: 1224 Grille!

Congratulations to Sarah Underwood, an environmental services associate, on receiving Maury Regional Medical Center’s Sunflower Award for Exceptional Service for May 2024! In her nomination for the Sunflower Award, the nominator described Sarah’s dedication to patients and Maury Regional Health. “It takes a village to take care of our patients. No job is too small. Sarah always comes to work with a smile and goes into every room to clean and also talk with the patients,” her nominator said. “On Easter, Sarah went above and beyond her job. While in my patient's room, Sarah came in to clean and brought a homemade Easter bag for the patient. I noticed she had multiple bags on her cleaning cart to give to all her patients. This not only touched my heart, but it made my sweet patient’s day. My patient even wanted a photo to remember Sarah and her gift. This is what Maury is all about! Compassion and excellent care all the way across the board.” “On Valentine's Day this year, Sarah brought each one of the patients in the Critical Care Unit a flower and a gift,” another nominator said. “Nothing elaborate, but it was enough to say that you are not forgotten while in the hospital. Everyone was so thankful. We need more caring people to do the little things for others that mean so much.” The Sunflower Award is an opportunity to recognize Maury Regional employees from all disciplines and departments who go above and beyond in their roles. Nominations are accepted year-round from patients, family members and colleagues. Learn more about the Sunflower Award or nominate an employee at https://lnkd.in/ezH9RYCi.
