We were delighted to see the recent profile of our new Employment partner, Alice Duffy in the latest edition of International Employment Lawyer, together with a nod to her two new senior associate colleagues in our Employment, Pensions and Benefits group, Rachel Barry and Jennifer Bassett. Their arrival in Matheson this summer has strengthened what was already one of the largest such groups in the Irish market, a team which now boasts 28 lawyers, including six partners and 11 associates. Alice has huge experience in advising internationally-focused companies, particularly in the technology sector, and in this piece she outlines the development of her career in employment law, and highlights some of the most high profile topics which the team is helping clients to prepare for, such as the right to request remote working and the widening of gender pay gap reporting, as well as the implementation of the EU Pay Transparency Directive and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Now in its second year, the Matheson LLP and University College Cork (UCC) Hackathon took place on campus with over 40 students taking part. This multidisciplinary student hackathon brought together students from law, commerce, data analytics, and finance undergraduate and postgraduates programmes to generate innovative ideas and explore emerging technologies. The theme for this year's hackathon was for students to investigate the use of AI in cybersecurity, focusing on its legal and ethical implications. Representatives from leading Munster based organisations including Dell Technologies, Johnson & Johnson, McAfee, Northern Trust, JP Morgan Workplace Solutions and Qualcomm Ireland (QT Technologies Ireland Ltd) also participated in the hackathon as panel speakers, mentors and judges for the teams. Matheson’s Kieran O'Sullivan, senior associate, Financial Institutions, moderated the hackathon with great energy and enthusiasm which played a big part in keeping the students motivated throughout the day. Welcomed by Grainne Callanan, partner and Head of Matheson’s Cork office, we had a great line up of speakers on the day including Mark Poustie, Dean of Law UCC; Dr Nessa Lynch, Matheson Lecturer in Law, Innovation and Technology Group and Deirdre Crowley, partner, Commercial Litigation and Digital Economy Groups. The judging panel announced the winning team made up of Abbie O’Sullivan, Brian Donnelly, Ronan O’Keeffe, Saya O’Sullivan and Sarah O’Neill whose winning idea examined AI's role in clinical trials, highlighting issues of bias, cybersecurity, and liability.
