Benjamin Cockrel did a recent fundraising test on Challenge gifts vs Matching Gifts. Results were interesting. What is the difference between a "Challenge" and a "Match." Specific details depend on the governing association and auditing/transparency organization. But generally a "Match" is at risk meaning if you don't raise the amount you lose the matching amount. E.g. Match is $100, you raised $80 you only get $80 in match money totaling $160 raised. A "Challenge" is money that has been received as a donation or is guaranteed to be received and is not at risk. E.g. Challenge is $100, you raised $80 you still get the $100 in challenge money totaling $180 raised. 💡 So why do either? 💡 Challenges and Matches inspire other donors to increase their giving or to give for the first time. However for some the motivation might not be there with their donors... If you're a #nonprofit planning a year end campaign. I highly recommend checking out this blog and potentially doing your own test between a "Matching Gift" and "Challenge Gift." https://lnkd.in/gfYXNuWg #nonprofit #fundraising #nonprofitleadership #nonprofitfundraising #matchinggrant

💡 Masterworks' recent study showed that matching gifts boosted response rates and revenue by 20%, while challenge gifts had no significant impact. 💡 Why? Donors love the clear, immediate incentive of doubling their impact. Now is the time to refine your approach for GivingTuesday and Year-End campaigns. Prioritize asking major donors and corporate partners to sponsor matching gifts to ensure your asks resonate and perform. Read more here:

The decision to convert donors into sustainers proves to be invaluable for nonprofit organizations regardless of the donor’s initial giving tier. Even when high-value donors choose to adjust their giving amounts when converting to recurring donations, the long-term benefits far outweigh any immediate reduction in gift amount.
