Tom Browne, MassBio's director of DEI, writes about creating community and collaboration in our DEI & Health Equity Roundtable, a safe space to discuss the challenges and opportunities in #DEI and #healthequity at a time when progress in equity and inclusion is under threat. "[I]t's been extremely heartening to see the level of peer-to-peer sharing and collaboration which has happened in our workshops as well as during the networking portion where we bring in minority-led caterers to provide food and drink for our guests to enjoy." CEO & President, MassBio | Chair, Bioversity | Board, The Boston Foundation | Vice Chair, American Cancer Society (ACS) Eastern New England | Board, MassBioEd Foundation
On behalf of MassBio and our 1,700 members, I congratulate Kirk Taylor, MD on becoming the new president and CEO of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. MassBio and the Center have enjoyed a close relationship since its inception and this public-private partnership has been foundational to growing the industry to its global leadership position in delivering for both patients and the economy. I appreciate that Governor Healey has selected someone who is keenly aware of our industry and what makes Massachusetts and this ecosystem so special. Over Dr. Taylor’s more than 25 years in the industry, he has held roles at many of our member companies, including Sanofi, Biogen, and EMD Serono, Inc., and supported growing biotechs as they’ve scaled, raised critical VC funding, and gone public. I look forward to collaborating with Dr. Taylor on our shared vision and priorities—from resourcing founders to growing biomanufacturing—so that we remain the best place in the world to start a biotech, make discoveries, and advance innovative treatments from the lab to people in need. #patientdriven #stateofpossible

#FundingFriday Over the last four weeks, nearly $950 million in venture capital funding has been invested in Massachusetts-based companies, from seed rounds to Series D. Leading the way is Waltham-based Kailera Therapeutics, which just launched (https://lnkd.in/e2rGbeUz) in the obesity drug space with $400M. Boston’s Aktis Oncology brought in a $175M round to allow them to test alpha radiopharmaceuticals against solid tumors (https://lnkd.in/eKQ2RvwC). Rounding out the top three is Watertown biotech Triveni Bio which raised $115M to expand its pipeline of treatments for immunological and inflammatory disorders (https://lnkd.in/eMQXP_yK). Congratulations also to Safi Biotherapeutics Inc (https://lnkd.in/eesPg6cr) and Bambusa Therapeutics (https://lnkd.in/eb5SDheb) on the seed rounds!

Compiling MassBio’s Vision 2030 plan took more than six months, and last night's conversation at the Harvard Club of Boston was a great way to celebrate its release. It was an incredibly engaged audience and a group that we will lean on over the next five years to achieve the goals laid out in the strategy. Thank you to our Board Chair Tamar Thompson for her excellent insights into the four catalysts, Hann Yew for expertly leading the conversation (and contributing as part of the McKinsey & Company team we tapped to help us), and to Bio-Innovation SIG co-chairs Andrew Rodriguez and Juan Carmona for hosting us and packing the room. 📸: Adam Parshall | #MassBioVision2030 | 🔗: https://lnkd.in/eDWmaGp3

As MassBio releases its 5-year strategic plan today, I'm thrilled to share key insights from my recent podcast conversation with Jason Cordeiro, Chief Operating and Innovation Officer. I had no idea about some of these programs, so I bet you'll learn something new even if you think you know all about MassBio! Here are some key takeaways from our conversation: 🌱 Nurturing Early-Stage Companies: MassBio is launching a Launchpad program to provide roadmaps and potential partners for startups, along with plans for a seed fund linked to their MassBio Drive accelerator. 🤖 Embracing AI and Tech: There's a strong focus on supporting AI-driven drug development and "tech for biotech" companies, recognizing the importance of digital innovation in the industry's future. 💰 Expanding Investor Base: MassBio is developing a program to demystify life sciences investing and attract new funders to the sector. 🧬 Fostering Diverse Talent: The successful Biodiversity initiative is expanding, with plans to develop targeted programs in different communities plus a new focus on executive-level talent development in partnership with The Termeer Foundation. 📣 Amplifying Industry Impact: MassBio aims to better communicate the biotech industry's story to lawmakers and the public, emphasizing its broader impact beyond financial metrics. These initiatives are part of MassBio's comprehensive strategy to maintain Massachusetts' leadership in the biotech sector. I'm excited to see how these plans unfold over the next five years! #Biotech #MassBio #Innovation #LifeSciences #AIinHealthcare Don't miss the full conversation! Link to podcast in comments.
