We work to create innovative policy and financing solutions that provide affordable homes and better lives.
About us
The Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP) is a self-supporting public non-profit organization that works with state government and with business, civic and community leaders to increase the supply of affordable housing across the Commonwealth. MHP uses funds from the banking industry to provide long-term loans for affordable rental housing. Since 1990, MHP has provided over $1 billion in loans and commitments for the financing of over 22,000 units of rental housing. MHP also helps communities build affordable housing and has provided technical assistance in over 300 Massachusetts communities. MHP's first-time homebuyer programs -- formerly SoftSecond and now ONE Mortgage -- have helped over 18,600 low- and moderate-income families purchase their first home with over $3 billion in private financing.

We are proud to partner with regional non-profits like Community Teamwork's Common Ground to develop affordable housing in the suburbs. They are essential to getting community-initiated housing efforts across the finish line. “MHP’s work with communities would not have borne the results it has without the efforts of mission-driven developers like Common Ground,” said Clark Ziegler, MHP’s Executive Director. “We are deeply grateful for their leadership team’s willingness to tackle these local initiatives that create more housing.” In our Annual Report, MHP's former Director of Public Affairs Ruston Lodi tells the story of Common Ground's Tavernier Place, an affordable housing development in Acton featuring 31 one-bedroom apartments for seniors. MHP doing all it can to "move the needle" on affordable housing through technical assistance at the municipal level.
MHP partnered with Metro West Collaborative Development (MWCD) and the Medway Affordable Housing Trust Fund to provide a tour of MWCD's Glen Brook Way Apartments in Medway. Representatives of nine affordable housing trusts learned how the new community was developed, supported by a strong town-developer partnership. Sometimes experiencing affordable housing can bolster the ability of municipal staff and volunteers to advocate for housing locally. Thank you to Caitlin Madden of MWCD and Glenn Trindade of Medway for sharing the story of Glen Brook Way! MHP was proud and excited to be at the Citizens' Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA) celebration of the shared accomplishments on the path to ensuring that everyone has a safe, affordable home in the community they choose. Along with Lt. Gov Kim Driscoll, Housing Secretary Ed Augustus, CHAPA CEO Rachel Heller and many others, we raised our glasses in a toast to the Affordable Homes Act and the important work yet to come.
THANK YOU to everyone who joined us last night for CHAPA's Affordable Homes Act Celebration! Here at MHP, we're always excited to talk about Residensity. Launched by our talented Center for Housing Data team in 2023 (shout out to Tom Hopper, Ellen Marya & Matija Jankovic), the site has proven its use time and again in answering important planning and development questions. Visitors to the site include residents interested in exploring the density of their neighborhood, planners who can compare existing housing stock with what's allowable by zoning, and affordable housing advocates (like those at Citizens' Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA) and Abundant Housing MA) who have used Residensity to provide technical support to communities addressing issues surrounding new housing development. Read more about Residensity in our Annual Report at https://lnkd.in/e66jq5Fz, and then check it out for yourself at residensity.mhp.net. #Density #ResidentialDensity #UrbanPlanning #Massachusetts

Long vacant, historically significant factory buildings in the heart of Springfield’s Mason Square neighborhood have been transformed into hundreds of affordable units, creating a vibrant community. MHP’s Executive Director Clark Ziegler, members of the lending team, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, and Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll were among those who joined First Resource Development for a recent ribbon cutting ceremony for the Mason Square Apartments at Indian Motorcycle and Knox Residences at Knox Automobile Co. This latest phase in development brings 156 new affordable units to the Commonwealth. MHP is the first mortgage lender. Both the Knox and Mason factory buildings lay vacant for decades and in poor condition. Knox was vacant for more than 70 years and was on the Preservation Massachusetts list of the most endangered historic resources. Knox was an automobile factory and the leading manufacturer of gasoline engine vehicles in the early 1900s. Mason factory was the home of Indian Motocycle (historic spelling). Mayor Sarno stated, “My administration is proud of the continued investment and development of our neighborhoods. This redevelopment of the historic Knox building is tremendous.” Another historical note: Mason Square is named after entrepreneur Primus Mason. Our 2023 Annual Report is hot off the press! We'd like for you to take a moment to browse the report and bring your attention to our Center for Housing Data Housing Stability Monitor. Senior Research Analyst Matija Janković hopes the report serves as a reminder that eviction and foreclosure rates in the state continue to need attention. “There hasn’t been adequate focus on housing stability issues after the early years of the pandemic," he says, "and the Housing Stability Monitor is a data-driven approach that sheds light on the real-life experiences of people dealing with housing instability.” Want more?
