About us
The Massachusetts Department of Correction has approximately 6,600 inmates in custody. There are 14 facilities with four different security levels: Maximum, Medium, Minimum and Pre-release. The gender breakdown in Massachusetts DOC is 97% male and 3% female. We have approximately 1900 inmates serving a life sentence. We have over 1500 active volunteers at our prisons. Approximately 4500 staff members, in which 76% of are security staff. ACA Eagle award recipient.

Congratulations to Director of Staff Development Janice Perez! She received the Leadership award at the Spirit of Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement Award ceremony recently. She was recognized for being a strong leader in her field that many are inspired by, especially women. Along with Staff Development, Director Perez also oversees the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity.

Congratulations to the members of the DOC Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) who placed 3rd this month in the Northeast Negotiator’s Challenge, hosted by the Worcester Police Department at Anna Maria College. The 8 participating law enforcement agencies coordinated a response to a mock 6-hour community-based scenario involving elements not typically handled by correctional professionals.

Our Victim Services Unit, in partnership with Just Alternatives, completed a 40-hour victim-centered training that certified 10 new Victim Offender Dialogue facilitators. The dialogue program allows victims and survivors the opportunity to have a face-to-face interaction with an incarcerated individual.

#Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought the news of Freedom to enslaved black people in Galveston, TX - 2.5 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we'll celebrate that journey to #Freedom and also the journey ahead.
