LowDose™ automates chemical feed in water treatment plants using the latest nano technology, zeta potential analyzers.

About us

Using leading-edge nanoparticle technology (online zeta analyzers), we created LowDose™, an automation and controls system for commercial water treatment plants. When we installed the first system, we were ecstatic with the dramatic and unexpected improvement in plant operations. It reduced coagulant demand at Salisbury, North Carolina by 50%, increased filter run time by 85%, and reduced plant discharge by 60%. LowDose™ is now operating at three plants, all have experienced similar results. Our markets are the United States, Canada and Europe. In addition to the logic we also offer pilots/demos and jar testing.

Case Study - Breckenridge, Colorado BACKGROUND The Town of Breckenridge (Town), Colorado commissioned a new conventional water treatment facility in 2020, with surface water as it’s primary source. After commissioning, the facility sought to optimize coagulant dosing with the goal of minimizing pretreatment solids carryover, maximizing filter run times, and improving solids dewatering capability. To achieve these goals, Marmac Water proposed a full-scale trial using an automated coagulant dosing system. Marmac Water was contracted to conduct jar testing to determine the feasibility of incorporating our LowDoseTM automated coagulant dosing system. On-site jar testing, review of operational data and observation of process performance determined that overdosing of coagulant was the primary cause of plant performance issues. We recommended a full-scale demonstration which was initiated in mid October and ran for thirty days. Control panel, analyzer installation and SCADA integration took only one day to install. The LowDoseTM software incorporates an on-line zeta potential analyzer as well as additional inputs pulled from the plant SCADA system. Full-time input monitoring provides optimized coagulant dosing which maintains desired particle charge of carryover particles discharging from the inclined plate settler to the filter. This optimized dosing improves filter run times and reduces produced sludge volume. This optimized control reduces coagulant demand, increases filter run times and provides enhanced dewatering. #zetaforwater #automatedcoagulation #advancedwatertreatment #marmacwater #lowdosdesoftware #waterutilites #digitalsolutionswater

CASE STUDY-JOHNSTOWN, COLORADO WATER TX PLANT The Town of Johnstown (Town), Colorado operates a conventional water treatment system utilizing dissolved air floatation (DAF) and multi-media filters.  The Town has started construction on a low pressure membrane filter addition to replace the aging conventional filters.  To gain operational experience with controlled dosing, the Town decided to implement the LowDose™ fully automated on-line system incorporating the Anton Paar Litesizer™ zeta potential analyzer. Control panel, analyzer enclosure and SCADA integration took one day to install.  The LowDose™ software incorporates an on-line zeta potential analyzer as well as additional inputs pulled from the plant SCADA system. #zetaforwater #onlinezetawater #waterutilities #automatedcoagulation #marmacwater #lowdosesoftware

LowDose™ Software's Role in Improving Filter Performance Nanoscience, one element of advanced water treatment, is of particular interest to us at MarMac Water. LowDose™ manages the electrostatic charge of nanoparticles in water. Our system incorporates the measurement of zeta potential, temperature, pH, and organic content into our logic to manage 1) the stability of the floc and 2) filter performance. We've already explained the significance of electrostatic charge on floc formation. However, we have yet to discuss how our system enhances filter performance. We believe our system improves filter performance because it manages the electrostatic charge of the particles in the water. The filter media possesses an anionic charge ( - ), and the chemicals have a cationic charge ( ). The particles are attracted to the filter, restricting the flow of the water. This increases head loss and shortens filter run times. Break through can also be a problem. Overdosing the coagulant results in even more particles sticking to the filter.   LowDose™ Software creates an anionic charge on the carryover particles, eliminating the electrostatic attraction between the filter media and the particles. This allows the filter to remain open and the water to flow freely thru. Our software, in combination with the zeta potential analyzer, can dramatically improve the performance of your filter. Principle @ MarMac Water, LLC - automation for water treatment plants using online zeta. Enhances filter performance, improves dewatering and reduces coagulant demand. Conventional or MF/UF.

COAGULANT OPTIMIZATION : 100% ANALYZER DRIVEN vs MACHINE LEARNING While machine learning is a valuable tool in many situations, it has inherent limitations when it comes to feeding coagulants in water plants. Here's why: 1) A program based on machine learning will only allow the plant to meet the best performance of the prior period, not the plant's OPTIMUM performance. 2) Machine Learning requires a large amount of accurate historical data to operate. How many water plants have been able to collect this? 3) No two turbidity events are identical. Simply having six months to one year's worth of data does not allow logic to accurately predict the correct coagulant response in the current event. 100% analyzer-driven software with zeta potential allows the plant to feed coagulants based on conditions in real-time. It rapidly responds to changes in temperature, pH, turbidity, and zeta to create stable flock and optimal filter performance. We have plants that have been running fully automated with LowDose™ for years, a testament to the success of analyzer-driven software with zeta. They sail through events such as rain and snowmelt. #zetaforwater #optimizecoagulants #lowdosesoftware #waterutilites #waterplantoptimization #improvefilterperformance

ZETA POTENTIAL MEASUREMENT vs STREAMING CURRENT ESTIMATE ZETA POTENTIAL ANALYZERS use a laser to find the true zeta potential of the floc in water. The zeta potential analyzer applies an electric field to a water sample. This causes the ions in the water to move towards the electrode with the opposite charge. How fast they are moving identifies the strength of the zeta potential, and which direction they are moving indicates the charge, either positive or negative. STREAMING CURRENT ANALYZERS use the measurement of the electric current which originates when water is driven by a pressure gradient through a channel. The channel has a negatively charged wall and the positively charged ions that are attracted to the negative surface are "counted". A formula is then applied to the measurement. The formula makes assumptions which may or may not be accurate. If you read through the literature about streaming current, you will find that streaming current measurement is less correct in water sources with higher alkalinity. Water with high alkalinity contains higher levels of calcium and magnesium. Calcium and magnesium carry a positive charge. The evidence indicates that streaming current monitors falsely count ions other than the organic material in the water. This leads to false zeta potential measurements. #waterutilityautomation #automatedcoagulation #streamingcurrent #zetapotential #waterutilities #wastewatercoagulation

PFAS and LowDose™ Software Marmac Water's LowDose™ Software allows enhanced coagulation while simultaneously maintaining optimum sedimentation, filtration and dewatering. The prevailing technologies for cost-effective removal of PFAS include: • Granular Activated Carbon Adsorption • Ion Exchange • Reverse Osmosis Granular activated carbon is considered the best option for regeneration/destruction when replacing carbon. Many utilities already have GAC vessels for taste and odor and/or organic removal. Effects on Coagulation: Many utilities will employ “enhanced coagulation” (2 – 3X higher coagulant dose) to increase soluble organic removal and reduce the exhaustion rate on carbon and ion exchange.  Increasing the coagulant dose and resulting higher/more stable zeta potential will reduce settling efficiency in sedimentation, causing higher particle carry-over to the filter. Higher carry-over undesirable zeta potential will result in a reduced filter volume and increased backwashing. Marmac Water LowDose™ software allows enhanced coagulation while maintaining optimum sedimentation, filtration, and dewatering.  #PFAS #MarMacWater #enhancedcoagulation #zeta #onlinezeta #automatedcoagulation #lowdosesoftware
