Jason Hickey, PE, SE, and Dr. Eric Matsumoto, PhD, PE, were invited to give a presentation at the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) COBS meeting in Indianapolis to the sub-committee on Knowledge Management & Workforce Development. Their presentation, “The Precast Bridge Studio: Preparing the Next Generation” focused on the precast concrete bridge design studio at California State University-Sacramento that educates civil engineering and construction management students on the design, fabrication and installation of prestressed bridge structures. Students were given the opportunity to experience the design process of real-world bridge projects, including visiting prestressed concrete fabrication plants, attending on-site bridge girder installations, and working with design and construction mentors, including Mark Thomas and Caltrans Division of Engineering Services. The Sacramento State University Precast Bridge Studio enjoys support from PCI West, a chapter of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI), representing precast, prestressed concrete producers and industry in California and Nevada. #Structures #Bridges #WeAreMarkThomas

We’re excited to announce that the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) has selected our team to develop an implementation-ready Bus Stop Safety and Accessibility Plan (Plan) for the 41 busiest bus stops in Orange County, located in the cities of Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana! The Plan leverages community engagement with comprehensive technical analysis to recommend safety enhancements and access improvements for pedestrians accessing OC Bus transit stops. A comprehensive walk audit within ¼ mile of study intersections serving the busiest bus stops will consider connections to nearby destinations and identify feasible engineering recommendations for implementation by local agencies. The community engagement will be centered upon feedback from transit riders and historically underrepresented and non-traditional stakeholders. The feedback received will inform the needs analysis and guide the recommendations considered in collaboration with local agency staff. Our team has been at the forefront of sustainable transportation and complete streets solutions, particularly in Orange County. The Plan will contribute to regional goals to increase the percentage of local trips made by walking and biking, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle miles traveled, increase awareness of active transportation, and plan for safe connections between essential destinations in the study areas. Improved safety and access will provide multiple benefits such as improved pedestrian safety, enhanced transit access, and integration with nearby economic and essential services. #ActiveTransportation #Transit #WeAreMarkThomas

We’re excited to announce that we’ve been selected to provide design and consulting services for the Gerber Creek Bridge Replacement project for Sacramento County! The existing bridge along Gerber Road at Gerber Creek was built in 1948 and is approximately 22 feet long and 30.33 feet wide, located approximately 0.2 miles west of Bradshaw Road. It comprises a cast-in-place single-span reinforced concrete slab supported by cantilever seat-type abutments founded on spread footings and carries one traffic lane in each direction. The Gerber Creek Road bridge crosses over Horse Creek in a low-density residential flat vineyard area in central Sacramento County approximately 5 miles east of SR 99, and provides access across the creek to communities and agricultural properties north and south of Gerber Road. Our team has proposed to replace the existing bridge with a wider structure to accommodate roadway improvements designed by Sacramento County Department of Transportation (SACDOT) for the Bradshaw Road and Gerber Road Improvement Project, which includes separated sidewalks and new Class II bike lanes. #Bridges #ActiveTransportation #WeAreMarkThomas

Today we were able to see the whale cutouts on the Chanticleer bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing up close. They were installed the week of June 22nd and have added a visual statement to the bridge viewed from Highway 1 below. We were able to see the detail that went into the design, fabrication, and installation of these unique cutouts that serve as a community identifier for the surrounding Live Oak, Santa Cruz, and Capitola areas. Here are some fun facts about the bridge: The bridge has a 14 feet wide riding and walking surface and is ADA compliant with gentle vertical slopes of less than 5%. The cost of the whale cutout fabrication and installation was $120,000 from Granite Construction's low bid. The whale design was selected by the community in 2019 through a public engagement process that included an in-person open house and an online survey that over 500 community members participated in. The railing height is 9 feet in total, which includes the low profile curb and welded wire mesh fencing. The low profile curb gives an open feel for the users of the bridge. The cutouts were designed by the Mark Thomas Landscape Architecture team, who used actual photos of whales to graphically develop the outlines and cutouts of each whale. The cutouts were laser cut from large sheets of aluminum that were transported to the site and spliced together when installed. The Chanticleer bridge is part of a ~$40M project, the first of 3 projects under development totalling over $300 million in investments to the corridor. This is the first of 4 bicycle and pedestrian overcrossings along the corridor, each with aesthetic features unique to the surrounding community. The bridge will be open to the public upon completion of construction, scheduled for late 2025 weather dependent. If you visit Santa Cruz be sure to check it out!
