About us
Mara Hoffman founded her eponymous label in the year 2000, directly after graduating from Parsons School of Design in New York City. Privately owned since then, and still headquartered in Manhattan, the lifestyle brand encompasses Women’s Ready to Wear and Swimwear. Fifteen years after its start, Mara Hoffman began to focus on sustainable practices, now the at the core of the company’s mission. Hoffman, who serves as President and Creative Director, also uses her platform to share an honest and empowering message on the way we live, care for the world and treat others; hoping to influence the relationship society has with clothing while simultaneously fostering mindful consumption habits. Historically known for her signature prints and silhouettes, Hoffman’s compass today points toward simpler, textural pieces that accentuate the human form. Above all, Hoffman keeps her creative commitment to presenting collections devoted to color, each a celebration of women.

#Sustainability is good business, advocates like to say. But the real test comes when sustainable measures don’t produce a return on investment. What if there isn’t a business case for sustainability? The reality is that policies or practices necessary for the planet, and the people living on it, are not always good for the bottom line — yet to achieve their goals, companies must find a way to make them work. “Sustainability is not always free; it’s not always cost savings,” says Maxine Bédat, director and founder of the US-based New Standard Institute. A small but growing crop of brands has begun doing things differently, laying down a blueprint for other companies who may be unwilling to lose money, even in the name of real progress. These brands green-light policies or initiatives that don’t necessarily make financial sense but are vital for the companies to tread lighter on the planet. I am pleased to say my latest story for Vogue Business rests on an analogy I haven't been able to get out of my head for some time now. It compares the fashion industry to the wildebeest migration across the Serengeti — everyone is stuck at the river, waiting for someone else to go across first. In Tanzania and across the border in Kenya, one of the world’s largest mammal migrations comes to a halt because the wildebeest at the front of the line are afraid of what’s in the water, what lies ahead. The fashion version: brands dip their toes in the water to test ideas and innovations from the safety of the riverbank, but they’re afraid or too risk-averse to go all in.
