X-ray fluorescence can enable us to quantify a wide range of different elements from a single measurement. This study, utilizing Malvern Panalytical’s Epsilon 4 systems, is focused on testing capillary blood spot samples for the presence of lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic – four elements associated with toxic exposure effects in humans 📚 The study is being led by Aaron James Specht from Purdue University College of Health and Human Sciences, who commented, “Using energy dispersive XRF, we can also measure other metals present in the sample at detectable levels, including zinc, iron and copper, for example. We don’t have such a big knowledge base about these metals simply because they haven’t been looked at in the same detail – this study is a unique opportunity to change that” 💡 Read more about the study here: https://bit.ly/3zeHvlM #EnvironmentalHealth #PublicHealth #Cleaner #Healthier #MoreProductive #MalvernPanalytical #PurdueUniversity

As a leading provider of non-ferrous metals and one of the largest copper recyclers worldwide, Aurubis Olen already plays a major role in shaping the circular economy. The installation of Malvern Panalytical’s on-line XRF analysis in Aurubis’ Olen, Belgium facility will now drive this capability forward. Our bespoke solution for process control, comprised of Epsilon Xflow spectrometers for on-line liquid elemental analysis, will significantly increase the company’s nickel and copper recycling capacity. Both metals are considered 'green' and are key to the sustainable energy transition. The Aurubis facility recovers valuable metals from bleed electrolyte streams in metal production, both in Olen and the nearby Beerse site. This enhancement will make Aurubis' processes faster, more efficient, and more sustainable by recovering valuable metals and ensuring more responsible use of resources – supporting the company’s strategy to drive sustainable growth within the metals industry. The tailored technologies created for the Olen recycling plant are based on energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry. This robust system enables on-line process control by monitoring the composition of liquids, liquors, and reagents under the harsh operating conditions of metals production in real-time. This fully-integrated multi-element analysis encompasses every step of the process, from sampling to final result, including temperature-controlled sample handling, sample conditioning, and multiplexing. Technologies traditionally used to measure exposure to heavy metals in blood samples are effective, but have several drawbacks: instruments are expensive, large and complex, and the venous blood samples analyzed require drawing by trained phlebotomists, are challenging to transport and store, and are destroyed or damaged during the testing process 🩸 A new study, utilizing Malvern Panalytical’s Epsilon 4 XRF systems, provides an innovative approach to the detection and measurement of metals in dried capillary blood spots collected on filter paper. Unlike traditional methods, energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) is non-destructive, enabling the re-use of biological samples for future studies. Its ease of use, relatively low cost, and ability to simultaneously analyze multiple samples make XRF a promising tool for research in environmental health 🌎 Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3zeHvlM Purdue University College of Health and Human Sciences #EnvironmentalHealth #PublicHealth #Cleaner #Healthier #MoreProductive #MalvernPanalytical #PurdueUniversity

Malvern Panalytical is excited to be supporting projects creating centres of excellence for X-ray analysis in Africa. In 2023, we supported the expansion of the ‘X-Tech Lab’, a platform dedicated to scientific and technological research to combat various development issues in Africa, funded by the Sèmè City Development Agency. X-Tech Lab aims to equip the national and regional scientific community with skills that allow them to integrate X-ray techniques, and to help X-ray experts implement and manage an African ‘synchrotron’ in the future. At an X-Tech Lab event last year, we announced that we’d sponsor three African students to enrol in a course at the prestigious Erice International School of Crystallography (IUCr) in Sicily, Italy. The researchers — Dr. Victor Odari, Dr. A. Essé AGOSSOU, and Afolabi Yemisi Tokunbo, MSc – have now returned from the course, which focused on X-ray crystallography. We caught up with them to find out about their experience and what they learned on their travels to Italy. Victor summarised his experience, "Erice School was the best crystallography school I have ever attended. It was an opportunity to meet and talk to some of the best crystallographers in the world, as well as learn from fascinating discussions such as artificial intelligence in synchrotrons, electron diffraction, neutron diffraction and applications in the pharmaceutical industry.” Afolabi shared why she wanted to participate in the course: “My first ever experience with a Malvern Panalytical Empyrean X-ray powder diffractometer was at X-Tech Lab in 2023. The experience was a most insightful opportunity to learn about material preparation for XRD analysis, instrumentation for varied applications, and the interpretation of the data using HighscorePlus software.” Essé commented, “It was a great networking opportunity and a chance to meet and learn from experts from all continents in the field of crystallography. I'd like to thank the whole X-Tech Lab team for their outstanding work, which has put Benin on the world map of science and innovation." We are delighted to have worked with Victor, Essé, and Afolabi to help them attend such an impactful course, and will follow their careers and future achievements with interest! #MalvernPanalytical #XRD #Research #XRDanalysis
