Did you know that anybody with a laptop and an internet connection can analyse whole genome sequences of 24,000 individual mosquitoes collected in 31 countries affected by malaria? 💻 Ahead of #WorldMosquitoDay on 20th August, we’re featuring six aspects of the Malaria Vector Genome Observatory, and today we’re focusing on data. The Malaria Vector Genome Observatory curates huge data resources and optimises them for analysis in the cloud. These are crucial for understanding how malaria is being transmitted, where insecticide resistance is evolving, and how we can move beyond control towards elimination. Inside this treasure trove of data are countless discoveries, waiting to be made. Markers of insecticide resistance, new cryptic species, and more. All made possible by open data sharing. While some data are under publication embargo, all data can be analysed now for public health and educational purposes. Find out more ➡ https://lnkd.in/e8AkSVjt
MalariaGEN
Research
MalariaGEN investigates genetic variation of malaria parasites and vectors and develops tools to control the disease.
About us
MalariaGEN is a scientific network that connects researchers and clinicians in malaria-endemic countries with cutting-edge DNA sequencing technologies and genomic research. Through a number of multi-centre projects, we provide a framework for generating, integrating and sharing genetic and genomic data, and for investigating key questions about malaria biology and epidemiology.

World Mosquito Day is coming up on 20th August! #WorldMosquitoDay In the lead-up, we're excited to share updates about our new Malaria Vector Genome Observatory page: https://lnkd.in/e2SfDAEN The Malaria Vector Genome Observatory is a collaborative effort to sequence the genomes of thousands of Anopheles mosquitoes and use those data to improve malaria control. 🦟 Mosquitoes are on the move, and they're evolving to evade insecticides and survive in more diverse environments. The open sharing of genomic data through the Observatory is designed to foster collaboration and accelerate research, preparing us to tackle these evolving threats to malaria control. Join us as we spotlight the key components of the Malaria Vector Genome Observatory 🧬 PAMCA Pan-African Mosquito Control Association | Target Malaria

Our next Journal Club is dedicated to the new Pf-HaploAtlas app! In this Journal Club, Nina White and Chiyun Lee, senior data scientists at the Genomic Surveillance Unit (Wellcome Sanger Institute), will lead an interactive session demonstrating the new Pf-HaploAtlas app, which allows users to study and track patterns of mutations across time and space. Join us to learn about how the app was developed, participate in a live demo on analysing haplotypes, and bring a gene of interest for the chance to run a live analysis with Pf-HaploAtlas. Are you a researcher or public health professional working on #malaria genomic epidemiology? We're thrilled to launch Pf-HaploAtlas, a new app for studying and tracking malaria parasite mutations to fight malaria! https://lnkd.in/eXGB5Gh5 Pf-HaploAtlas allows any user with an internet connection to track groups of genetic mutations, or haplotypes, of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite. The app draws from the MalariaGEN Pf7 dataset to provide innovative visualisations of all core genes of the P. falciparum parasite. Developed using open data and open-source software, Pf-HaploAtlas is accessible to a wide range of users interested in malaria genomic surveillance and data analysis, including researchers and public health officials. 💻 Try Pf-HaploAtlas: https://lnkd.in/eejVbK5D ⏯ Watch a short tutorial on how to use Pf-HaploAtlas: https://lnkd.in/eu9MXWHT 📰 Read the accompanying pre-print: https://lnkd.in/eBZgkMtz Genomic Surveillance Unit (Wellcome Sanger Institute) | Streamlit

If you're interested in learning more about malaria mosquitos, check out this online course from University of Basel and Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute: "The Resistant Mosquito: Staying Ahead of the Game in the Fight Against Malaria." https://lnkd.in/eKX54h93 Who should join? The course has been designed for anyone involved in mosquito vector control, as well as students and professionals in public health, entomology, epidemiology, or evolutionary biology. What you'll learn: Understand insecticide resistance (IR) and its development in mosquito populations. Assess the impact of IR on malaria control. Explore applied Insecticide Resistance Management (IRM) strategies. Recognize the critical role of IRM in reducing, eliminating, and eradicating malaria.
