🌏 This week in Tokyo, ADB and ADBI brought together tireless public health leaders from 10 member states (Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Solomon Islands), development partners, think tanks, implementers, and CSOs. The focus was on how climate change is intensifying challenges in eliminating diseases like Malaria and TB, and investing in health adaptation and innovations in disease control. ADB's leadership is vital in climate health, offering necessary financial support to strengthen health systems and drive innovation toward malaria elimination in the region by 2030. 🏆 Last week, Friends of the Global Fight celebrated the life-saving impact of bipartisan congressional leadership on The Global Fund, honoring Sen. John Boozman, Rep. Pete Aguilar, Rep. Malaria perpetuates inequity, severely impacting those in poverty with limited access to healthcare. Malaria kills more people in low-income countries than HIV and TB, with 70% of deaths in 11 countries, including Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Uganda. These nations rank low on the Human Development Index, and malaria traps them in poverty and hinders economic progress. It is a vicious cycle. But we CAN break this cycle. Decisive investment is essential. We urgently need funding for The Global Fund to reduce the global malaria burden. 🌍 This week, our CEO Martin Edlund spoke at the ADB-ADBI Policy Dialogue on “Investing in Climate Change Adaptation: Innovations in Climate-Induced Infectious Diseases Control for #Malaria and Tuberculosis.” The event brought together health and climate change experts and government officials to discuss actions to address the impacts of climate change on #infectiousdiseases. As global temperatures rise, so does the threat of malaria and other vector-borne diseases. Investing in innovative tools and technologies to help understand and forecast disease patterns will be critical to addressing the health impacts of #climatechange. 🦟 Thank you to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Asian Development Bank Institute for hosting this timely discussion.

The second annual Forecasting Healthy Futures Global Summit offered a critical opportunity to engage global stakeholders and advance the #climate and #health movement, alongside the #COP29 leadership team as they finalized their agenda for this year’s UNFCCC conference in Azerbaijan. Rising temperatures and extreme weather events due to climate change are escalating the risk of infectious diseases, and the communities contributing least to global emissions are at highest risk. Between 2026-2030, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance will deepen its focus on helping countries adapt to the impacts of #climatechange. To provide more protection against climate-sensitive diseases, Gavi will ramp up its #malaria vaccine programme; introduce a vaccine against #dengue; and expand preventive campaigns and vaccine stockpiles against diseases like #cholera and #yellowfever. 

Breaking news: There are now two safe and effective #malaria vaccines! Today Côte D'Ivoire becomes the first country to launch the #R21 vaccine, with more countries to follow soon. This marks a significant milestone in the fight against malaria. The R21 vaccine, alongside the RTS,S vaccine and other innovative interventions, provides a powerful tool in our arsenal against this ancient disease, which causes nearly a half million deaths among children under 5 each year.

Watch as Côte D'Ivoire’s Minister of Health Pierre N’gou DIMBA looks ahead to the upcoming launch of the second #malaria vaccine, R21, into its routine immunisation programme, tackling one of Africa's deadliest diseases.
