It's totally cliché to say 'earth day is every day' but we've been championing sustainable design since our founding 15 years ago. Whether it be our specs which have never allowed VOCs, going vinyl free as a firm at the beginning of 2023 or this epic project for L'Oréal which received both LEED and WELL Platinum certification we're here to mitigate the impact of the built environment on climate change.

Reflecting on April & Earth Month, we wanted to take a moment to recognize L'Oreal's collective efforts and successes in the world of #sustainability. 🌎 L'Oreal West became the first facility in the zone to achieve LEED Platinum and WELL certification. 🔋 Our new R&I Campus boasts an on-site solar array that covers 60% of its energy usage. 💫 Through the Inclusive Sourcing program, North America supported the employment of 5,346 beneficiaries coming from underrepresented communities. 🍃 We reduced product waste by improving launch efficiency, reducing returns, and donating over 12 million units of finished goods. 🚚 We improved transportation emissions with a 38% reduction in airfreight emissions compared to 2022. ♻️ We scaled our Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly badging through Cradle to Cradle certifications and now have badging on 600 products. 💧 For the 8th year in a row, L'Oreal Groupe received a 'AAA' rating, the highest rating, from the CDP on our sustainability commitments to water, forest, and fighting climate Change. L'Oreal is the only company to receive this AAA rating for 8 straight years. There is still so much work ahead of us. Our commitment to lead responsible beauty has never been stronger. Wow! A 25% increase in utilization after a few thoughtful, light touch interventions? That's a pretty amazing ROI. We loved being a part of this project with the awesome team at Okta and we really love working with brilliant orgs that invest in workplace research to improve their employee's experience in the office. The proof that good design can solve real workplace problems is in the data!

Sustainability & Strategy @ Okta | LEED AP

In November of 2023 we created a future of work prototype floor at Okta SFHQ! Mitch, Ann and I spent countless hours collaborating closely with our Workforce Identity Cloud and Customer Identity Cloud teams to understand why they come into the SF office & how the workplace could enable them to do their best work. As a result, we removed the sea of white desks and replaced them with multiple settings for both individual and collaborative work. We updated conference rooms to have flexible furniture and the latest collaboration technology. Lastly, we brought in a plethora of plants and new graphics into the space to emulate the beautiful Northern California landscape. Over the past 6 months we’ve seen an increase in utilization by these teams of ~25% despite no required in office time! Here are some lessons we’ve learned: 😄 Engaging employees early on leads to them being invested in the space! 🛬 Many people who thought they needed a desk just needed a place to land between meetings co-located with their team. This is where our library tables come into play. 🤝 Open collaboration spaces are underutilized because people feel they will bother those working at nearby desks. By shifting collaboration spaces to be acoustically enclosed with flexible furniture, we’ve seen higher utilization.  🖌 Digital isn’t always better. We’ve employed the Steelcase flex rail whiteboard systems so people can easily move whiteboards between desks and meeting spaces or hold them in front of zoom cameras for those quick drawings.  🏢 Co-location enables cross functional work! Vertical campuses can struggle with cohesion so collocating the right teams on the right floors can be key to enabling their cross functional success.  🌳 People feel more alive surrounded by plants! We've gotten incredible feedback on the plethora of plants throughout the space. We look forward to continuing to support our employees with the best workspaces to fit their needs. Thank you to the incredible team of partners that helped us deliver the space Johnny Lemoine for his incredible graphics, NOVO Construction, Inc., Ann Bamesberger, One Workplace, Angela Thomas, Derek Ramsey, Melissa Hanley, Michael DiMonaco, and our wonderful Okta team Kara Zaninovich, Lexie Yacoel Gotcher, Mitch Brodnansky, Melissa Myers,

San Francisco is not just surviving, it's thriving! Blitz Partner and architect, Melissa Hanley, AIA IIDA ASID spoke on the SUSTAINABILITY BY DESIGN panel at the Bisnow Architecture & Design Summit yesterday. With nearly 300 attendees in full network, connect and learn mode, this event proved the Bay Area's design scene is alive and well. "The most important thing we can do as an industry is come to alignment on a singular metric by which to measure sustainability for commercial interiors. It's more than carbon and certainly more than LEED. A carbon neutral project that gets ripped out after 5 years isn't sustainable! With over two dozen product certifications (which are often in conflict with one another) and at least a dozen rating systems in active use, not to mention the building code, the efforts by designers to improve the triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) is being diluted by complexity. With a singular metric our industry can be laser focused on making substantial changes quickly. We need bold moves and we need them now." - Melissa Hanley Thanks to the co-panelists Phoebe Huei Yee, Joe Fitzpatrick, Todd Wright Christopher Lyon and Jeff D. Brink a lively discussion. #MakeItBlitz #Design #InteriorDesign #Architecture #ArchitectureInteriors #Interiors #CommercialDesign #CommercialInteriors #ArchitectureandDesign #AllofArchitecture #ArchitectureContent #OfficeDesign #OfficeSnapshots #ModernInterior #ArchDaily #ArchitecturePhotography #RetailDesign #retailinterior #HospitalityDesign #HospitalityInteriors #officedesign #officespace #officedecor #workspace

Last week for Women in Construction Week Partner and Co-Founder, Melissa Hanley, AIA IIDA ASID participated in an excellent panel discussion hosted by NOVO Construction, Inc. and moderated by Joan Price. Fellow panelists included the inimitable Parinaz Aghili Allison Sawyer and Sarah Garcia. The conversation covered a range of topics from work-life balance to imposter syndrome (spoiler: we all feel it). Thanks again to Novo for hosting and to everyone who came out to support women in the industry!

We are very proud of one of our most recent projects for @okta . Okta aimed to give local and remote team members a sense of pride, belonging and home at the San Francisco Headquarters offices. The task: create an irreplicable experience worthy of the trip to HQ. The concept of the Commons floor was to make a true “Love Letter to San Francisco”. This multi-use, unassigned work and activity space has ample resources for team engagements all guided by a whimsical immersion into Okta's hometown. On the floor, a collage of 13 curated spaces inspired by 13 vibrant neighborhoods near Okta's HQ includes not only a decked-out barista-worthy coffee bar under the Golden Gate Bridge flanked by a Cable Car storefront but a mini golf course and it's very own Lombard Street. For more beautiful images of the space please see https://lnkd.in/gpxDgbsU
