Is every patient appropriate for an ambulatory surgery center? ASCs offer many benefits to patients and providers, but is everyone a candidate? Clinicians must consider the overall health of the patient from comorbidities to functional status. Patients with poorly controlled disease states, severe sleep apnea, or noted anesthesia complications may require a hospital setting. The Perioperative Surgical Home at Strategic Health Partners / MAK Anesthesia has established criteria to help determine appropriate patients to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.

An outpatient surgery center (OSC) is a medical facility that specialize in outpatient surgical procedures. Some are hospital owned while others are independent. These patients do not require an overnight stay in the hospital and are able to recover at home. The OSC is a lower cost alternative to the hospital. It provides convenience to the patient and often better overall satisfaction of care. Outpatient centers are on the rise.

The Quintus Aim?? Just over 18 months ago, we took our organization through a transaction. HOWEVER, unlike most M&A activity in healthcare, this transaction left the employees--the providers and support personnel--holding the stock. We became a 100% employee-owned company through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) on October 1, 2022. It is hard to summarize all the good that comes from keeping ownership close like that. Suffice to say the culture continues to strengthen and momentum is building. ESOPs are still uncommon in healthcare for a myriad of reasons (none very good, in my opinion), but I was fortunate to recently meet a leader (Dan Bragg, CPA, CMPE) who is part of one. Though their ESOP journey started more recently, it was fun to compare notes and reminisce about the early benefits. Today, I came across an article written by the CEO of Dan's company, Robert Slattery, who proposes the Quintus Aim in healthcare, adding Employee Engagement and Empowerment as the essential 5th dimension (expanding on the Triple- and Quadruple-Aim frameworks). I thought the article was compelling. Here's to employee ownership in healthcare!

Are all these labs really necessary? Leading up to surgery many providers will run a whole panel of labs and tests that aren't indicated for the surgery or in regard to the patient's health history. This is not cost-effective for our patients or our hospitals. Most blood work should be based on the patients' comorbidities and not just a blanket set for everybody. The chart below from Choosing Wisely shows some of the reasons providers feel the need for over testing. The Perioperative Surgical Home works to prevent over testing in perioperative phase.

Everyone appreciates a great meal. Once a month, MAK Anesthesia’s Brian West exchanges his anesthetist scrubs for a chef’s hat and prepares a tasty lunch for the lucky team at Peachtree Orthopedics in Cumming, GA. He states “it really brings everyone together. It’s a great team and worth cooking for once a month.” February’s meal featured jambalaya and chicken noodle soup for 30 people. Prior lunches have included tacos and smoked ribs. Next month chili is on the menu! Peachtree Orthopedics #surgerycenter #anesthesia #caaweek
