On July 23, CHIA Executive Director Lauren Peters participated in The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine webinar "Health Care Spending and Related Data," which brought together national and state experts to discuss using data to form a comprehensive picture of health care spending and advance cost containment efforts. The National Academies are private nonprofit institutions that provide expert advice on some of the most pressing challenges facing the nation and world. Today HHS announced a reorganization that will streamline and bolster tech, cyber, data and AI strategy & policy functions. ONC is now the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ASTP/ONC) and will assume oversight over tech, data and AI policy & strategy for the department, including the HHS-wide roles of Chief Technology Officer, Chief Data Officer, and Chief AI Officer. Janice Karin, our Director of Policy, Technology, and Innovation and Co-Chair of the WEDIHealth Equity Workgroup, recently gave a talk to that group on disability access in healthcare covering relevant policy and systemic issues at healthcare organizations, data required to make disabled access go more smoothly, and data exchange/interoperability needed to ensure the right people have access to the right data about accommodations and similar topics. Her talk is based on comments MHDC sent to AHRQ in response to a key question RFI (https://ow.ly/SPPg50SGmBE) and to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) OCR in response to a proposed rule on discrimination on the basis of disability (https://ow.ly/go9b50SGmBG) during 2023. These comments leveraged discussions held in our Data Governance Collaborative (DGC) working group sessions as well as two public DGC Deep Dives on SDOH that touched on relevant topics (particularly the policy/systemic issues). https://ow.ly/EBIJ50SGmBF
