Founders Hall, built for the UW Foster School of Business, was officially named a Wood in Architecture Award Winner by WoodWorks at the American Institute of Architect’s National Convention in Washington, D.C.! The project, an IPD delivery collaboration between MKA, LMN Architects, and Hoffman Construction Company, is the first fully mass timber building on campus. By using mass timber, the project team reduced the building’s embodied carbon by 58 percent. MKA’s innovative approach to the hybrid mass timber structural system relied on an intelligent blend of glue-laminated and cross-laminated timber, along with strategically placed concrete and steel, focusing on material use efficiency. Now considered the greenest building on campus, the LEED Gold project sets an example of how to use wood to provide measurable benefits for future University of Washington campus buildings. Congratulations to the entire project team! For more information, visit https://lnkd.in/gMD7xrDE #MKAwesome #structuralengineering #masstimber #embodiedcarbonreduction

Congratulations to Principal Peter Somers, who was recently appointed Chair of the ASCE/SEI’s Seismic Rehabilitation Standards Committee. The Standard was first published in 2006 and updated in 2013, 2017, and, most recently, 2023. The next update will be published in 2029, with Peter at the helm. “I am deeply honored to have been appointed chair of the ASCE/SEI Seismic Retrofit of Existing Buildings Standards Committee for the next ASCE 41 development cycle. As a long-time user of the Standard and contributor to the development process, I am excited to lead the effort to produce the next state-of-the-practice technical standard for seismic evaluations and retrofits. “As our understanding of earthquake risks continues to improve, as the focus on creating resilient communities expands as a public policy goal, and as the reuse of existing buildings becomes an even more important part of sustainability in the built environment, ASCE 41 remains a critical component in preserving and improving the performance of existing buildings for this and future generations.” American Society of Civil Engineers SEI - Structural Engineering Institute #MKAwesome #civilengineering #structuralengineering #seismic #retrofit

Teams of local high school students participating in the ACE Mentor Program of Washington presented their final projects last night at the University of Washington. Five MKA employees—Senior Design Engineer Saya Kajiwara and Design Engineers Venkat Ashrith, Abby Desa, Elizabeth Espitia, and Ryan Thornton— participated in this year’s program, mentoring students via after-hours meetings focused on a real-world design project. “ACE exposes students to all disciplines involved in the building industry and allows students to ask questions directly to an industry professional,” said Kajiwara. “I had a great time with our team this year. It was fun to collaborate with mentors from other firms on our team and work with the students as they developed their designs.” “It really took me by surprise the number of concepts the students were able to pick up so quickly,” echoed Espitia. Since its inception in 2001, the ACE Mentor Program of Washington has helped more than 4,000 students learn all about the architecture, engineering, and construction professions and has awarded more than $1.2 million in scholarships. Magnusson Klemencic Associates reposted this
I had the great pleasure of speaking with students of the Master of Science in Project Management (MPM) at Northwestern University to share some thoughts on a career in engineering consultancy. I hope the students found the presentation interesting and thought-provoking. It focused on the importance of challenging the status quo and asking the simple, but critical, question of “why?” in their day-to-day studies and in their future careers. Thank you to Shelley Finnigan, S.E. and Michelle Mittelman for the invitation and for being such great hosts!

MKA is proud to continue our work with the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations. Here are some cool facts for your next trivia night: Morocco is the oldest ally of the United States — and when the consulate opens, Morocco will (temporarily) be the home of the oldest AND newest U.S. diplomatic posts in the world!
The latest U.S. Department of State Magazine featured U.S. Mission Morocco - the oldest ally of the United States – in "Morocco: Enduring Partnership Builds Upon Shared History and Interest." OBO’s construction of a new consulate campus (NCC) is underway in Casablanca. The improved facilities in the city's Casa Anfa district will expand public engagement and will be model of sustainability with a solar photovoltaic system, energy-efficient mechanical systems, and water-conserving landscaping. “The new consulate will offer an integrated public engagement space in an up-and-coming neighborhood where we can host larger audiences and benefit from updated technology,” said Nick Barnett, public affairs counselor at Embassy Rabat. “The NCC will have a meaningful and lasting effect on the local community, and the process has already started,” said Tarik Merghoub, OBO project director in Casablanca. “Over 1,000 Americans, Moroccans, and third country nationals have expended more than 3.5 million labor hours on the job already and have overcome language barriers, cultural differences, and experience disparities through a real cross-pollination process.” When the consulate opens, Morocco will (temporarily) be the home of the oldest and newest U.S. diplomatic posts in the world. 💻Read the full feature: https://bit.ly/3TnQhEy -- The Miller Hull Partnership, LLP BL Harbert International LLC KCCT U.S. Department of State #Casablanca #Morocco #Diplomatic U.S. Mission Morocco
