Autonomous Engineering®

About us

MAGMA stands for robust and innovative casting solutions, as well as a strong partnership with the metal casting industry. MAGMA’s product portfolio, based on Autonomous Engineering™, leads to robust and cost-effective solutions in component design, tooling lay-out and production. MAGMA was founded in 1988 in Aachen, Germany. MAGMA now has 9 locations worldwide serving the foundry and die casting industries. Before simulation, the metal casting industry was completely dependent on the experience of foundry experts, "Tribal knowledge" and trial and error when it came to the casting process. Early adapters recognized the revolutionary potential of using software to predict what happens during the casting process to avoid or reduce the need for excessive and costly trials (and errors) on the shop floor. MAGMASOFT® not only predicts the solidification and cooling of a casting but offers solutions for a large diversity of quality determining factors. The software provides quantitative answers for any cast material and considers the entire process including core making, tool design, heat treatment and machining. Today we have realized even more: Simulation has become AUTONOMOUS ENGINEERING! To benefit from this technology in the best possible way, we have coupled MAGMASOFT® autonomous engineering with a systematic methodology, which we call the MAGMA APPROACH. For our customers to work proficiently and for us to clearly stand independent of our competition, MAGMAacademy provides ongoing training, seminars, workshops, and webinars. MAGMA provides hands-on support in person at your location or on the phone. Our engineers not only know MAGMASOFT® they know the foundry and die casting industries. Most of our engineers have worked in either a foundry or die casting facility. Both training and support staff focus on our customers and their organizations being successful, not just on our users being able to use MAGMASOFT®.

  • Our colleague Marcus Schopen from MAGMA Gießereitechnologie GmbH will be presenting 'The Digital Foundry Process - MAGMA and Industry 4.0' at this year's FOUNDRY INDUSTRY 4.0 CONFERENCE in Milwaukee on July 30 – 31. “Simulation, a virtual replica of the casting process based on mathematical and physical modelling, has been used for more than 30 years as a “Digital Twin” to design cast parts, processes, tooling and predict the expected component quality”, says Marcus. “In my presentation, I will examine the systematic coupling of the Digital Shadow and the Digital Twin by implementing a bidirectional data interface between software and a high pressure die casting machine, allowing an online exchange of process data and simulation results.” Learn more here: https://buff.ly/3zO99pY

  • Over many years, the liquid metal flow in steel continuous casting tundishes and molds, the cooling and solidification of the melt and the formation of segregation, as well as stresses and cracks have been the subject of numerous projects in which the phenomena were analyzed by various measurement techniques, calculations and/or analytical or numerical simulations. The motivation for these efforts was the desire to understand the details of the phenomena influencing the casting process performance and the strand quality, in order to be able to optimize the casting process conditions. • The continuous casting process is of crucial importance for the manufacture of semi-finished products. Liquid metal is introduced into a short, intensively cooled mold, which may include graphite inserts, from a tundish or launder. At the same rate, metal is withdrawn from the mold, where the presence of a stable solidified shell at the end of the mold needs to be assured. In the start-up phase, a starting ingot is positioned in the mold, and after reaching the desired filling level, the starting ingot is removed and the metal inflow adjusted accordingly. https://buff.ly/3UNUhjM

  • We don’t have x-ray goggles to see what’s truly happening in foundry processes. MAGMASOFT® virtually illustrates scenarios we can’t witness first-hand. Here’s a cut view of a converter vessel in operation, showing the molten bath’s temperature & movement (via vectors). The vectors become longer, indicating an increase in velocity, as they enter the reaction chamber & churn. Air contact shows the amount of time the free surface spends reacting with air, creating slag. Using this simulation, the vessel geometry may be manipulated & optimized to create peak mixing & limit air contact. #MAGMAtips

  • A modular software design covers the complete process chain of cast components. The software can be applied for optimized process robustness and part quality from conceptual to final component design, during the tooling layout and prototyping, all the way through to the production and heat treatment processes. MAGMASOFT ® offers the following main benefits: ✔️ Supports all cast materials and all aspects of casting manufacture including melting and metallurgy, pattern and coremaking, cleaning and repair ✔️ Offers a virtual test field for the reduction of metalcasting defects with high degrees of freedom without production risk ✔️ Establishes optimized operating points for quality, yield and cost ✔️ Identifies optimal process conditions for robust process windows early and reliably ✔️ Allows faster decision making to establish saving time for all parties involved ✔️ Empowers quality management by generating systematic understanding how process variability affects quality ✔️ Improves communication and confidence within your company and in cooperation with customers ✔️ Offers reliable and early information to designers for robust product and process development https://buff.ly/3wODFig
