When an abnormal blood vessel burst in his spinal cord, 21-year-old Airman Randy Rodriguez suddenly couldn’t move anything below his neck. Following several surgeries at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, he arrived at Madonna’s spinal cord injury program. Thanks to Madonna’s specialized technology and physician-led care team, Randy slowly regained his independence. After weeks of intense physical and occupational therapy, he walked out of Madonna’s doors. He continues to progress in outpatient therapy and has recently returned to active duty in the U.S. military. “I can walk faster now, and I am getting stronger,” Randy said. “I couldn’t have done this on my own. Madonna was that place for me.”

An estimated 5% of adults in the U.S. are currently experiencing long COVID. Madonna’s interdisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers is committed to accelerating the translation of research into practice to enhance lives, care and outcomes. Last week, our team collaboratively advanced five presentations at the 2024 American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) 101st Annual Fall Conference in Dallas, Texas. The topics covered included the evaluation and management of long COVID fatigue and brain fog, the use of wearable sensors to enhance care and outcomes for individuals recovering from long COVID, and navigating mental health challenges faced by early-career researchers.

Recovering from a serious illness or injury doesn’t mean you have to miss out on beloved traditions. Just in time for her favorite holiday, Halloween, 21-year-old McKenzie Schweigert went with Madonna's rec therapy team to Vala's Pumpkin Patch on a community outing. While working on her standing balance and activity tolerance, McKenzie picked apples, drank apple cider, and explored all the fun fall activities at Vala’s. “You don’t really know how to navigate a wheelchair in the community until you actually have to,” she said. “This was a good way to show myself I can still go out with friends and I can continue to have normal experiences.”

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On #WorldStrokeDay, we want to introduce you to Jolana Varga, a stroke survivor recovering at Madonna. Jolana’s stroke has made her ability to speak difficult, but not her ability to sing. Watch how her Madonna care team incorporated music therapy with her husband and bandmate into her recovery. Stay tuned for her full rehabilitation journey soon.

As a former football coach and current superintendent of a school district, Dave Hutchison is used to motivating others. After a cancer diagnosis in August, he’s using those skills to motivate himself during his rehabilitation journey. Combined with Madonna’s clinical expertise, Dave’s positive attitude has propelled his progress and allowed him to return to his students sooner than expected. MORE: https://lnkd.in/g4Wb-S8J
