Exciting transmission news in the Midwest! MISO advanced its second portfolio of Long Range Transmission Planning projects, which would create a 765-kV backbone across the region. The grid operator expects the lines to produce net benefits of $23.1 billion over 20 years and $83.2 billion over 40 years across the Midwest ⚡ Next steps: -MISO committees to review this fall -Board vote expected in mid-December If approved, the projects will come online from 2032 to 2034. "Not only will more transmission help tap new, economic resources, but result in electricity bills that are more reasonable than if we had a balkanized energy grid." -Beth Soholt, Clean Grid Alliance Executive Director More via Utility Dive ⤵ https://lnkd.in/eW-h_Pvn

The Macro Grid Initiative is a joint effort to build support for expanding and upgrading America’s transmission network.
About us
ACORE’s Macro Grid Initiative seeks to expand and upgrade the nation’s transmission network to deliver job growth and economic development, a cleaner environment, and lower costs for consumers. Through a transmission Macro Grid, we can connect centers of high renewable resources with centers of high electric demand, enhance grid resiliency and dramatically reduce carbon emissions. ACORE and its partners advocate for a fully planned and integrated national transmission system, promote a new FERC transmission planning rule, and enlist state leaders to advance the next round of regional and interregional transmission planning.

🎉 Big news for Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs) 🎉 GETs are low-cost technologies that can be deployed on the existing electricity system in less than a year, increasing transmission capacity in the near term to help meet demand growth! Deploying GETs and other Advanced Transmission Technologies while continuing to plan, permit, and build regional and interregional transmission lines is critical to ensuring affordable, reliable power to all consumers ⚡
California Governor Gavin Newsom just signed SB1006 into law! Dynamic Line Ratings, Advanced Power Flow Control and Topology Optimization will now be used in transmission planning in California. Once fully deployed, these tools will unlock hundreds of millions of dollars of wholesale electricity cost savings every year! https://lnkd.in/gdrdeWBy

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory released a report as part of its forthcoming National Transmission Planning Study, finding that 12 Western transmission projects in advanced stages of permitting would provide significant consumer benefits if constructed by 2030. Among other things, the projects would: ⚡ Reduce electricity generation costs 32% by the end of the decade ⚡ Add 3,000 miles of new transmission, connecting places like WY to southern CA, NV and western AZ ⚡ Help ensure reliable power supply even during emergencies "Because we have developed power flow cases that show how electricity actually moves through the grid for different operating hours under different generation mixes, grid planners in the Western Interconnection can use these study cases in future planning." -Nader Samaan, PNNL chief power systems research engineer and study co-author Read more here ⤵ https://lnkd.in/eiSEMDfV
