This college student turned a high school job shadow with the Macomb County Government Department of Roads into a college internship. That's impressive --- but it's also the work of our Fueling the Talent Pipeline initiative in action. We were so proud to today present a belated Macomb Business Award to Maria Zardis, the former program manager for marketing and communications within MCPED. Maria was named the Beacon of Economic Development as part of the 2024 event, and today we had the pleasure of joining MBA emcee Huel Perkins and MCPED Director Vicky Rowinski, CEcD to officially give her the coveted crystal trophy. Maria helped create the Macomb Business Awards more than a decade ago in an effort to highlight local organizations and elevate their accomplishments. To put it simply, the event would not exist without her. This, combined with the myriad of other programs, initiatives and activities she spearheaded in her career with MCPED, truly makes her a Beacon of Economic Development, and we're thrilled to shine a spotlight on her. Thank you Maria! #macombbizawards

MCPED was thrilled to host our quarterly Macomb Partners meeting today in Chesterfield Township at Brandenburg Park. We discussed all things Lake St. Clair -- including the Blue Economy Taskforce and the incredible shoreline restoration work done along the park's waterfront. If you haven't been to the park to see it in person (plus to spend time on the updated pier) we highly recommend doing so this summer!

This is great news! Last month the MCPED Parks and Natural Resources team helped host experts from the Association of State Floodplain Managers and toured them through sites in the City of New Baltimore and St. Clair Shores. Both communities are participating in a yearlong study as part of the Great Lakes Coastal Communities Resilience Challenge, an initiative which will help communities prepare for flood hazards through increased understanding and evaluation of local plans and policies. Facilities toured include the Milk River Retention basin, Chapaton Retention basin, Crapau Creek and New Baltimore Shoreline. All this demonstrates Macomb County's leadership when it comes to infrastructure and planning.
